Dev Log #01 Updated Characters & Room

Hi everyone,

As many of you saw in the recent poll, the Goblin will officially be the main character. I removed a little bit of dirt (it was maybe too much), made a few tweaks to his model, and also decided to adjust the princess most importantly her body, her height (to better match the goblin), and some other details. Since I’m already remaking the scenes, it made sense to update both.

I also reworked the bed in the princess’s room to make it perfect, down to every pillow and texture. But after hours of work, I hit a major issue, when I loaded the scene, everything turned into default spheres completely unusable. I been noticing more crashes, longer save/load times, and broken textures lately when loading and now I know why. Turns out, each of my scene files had grown to over 2 GB (usually normal is 30-200MB for complex scenes). The reason is that even when I delete objects in a scene, importing that scene into another keeps all the deleted objects as hidden metadata. So over time, as I built new scenes on top of old ones, the file size kept growing and with it, all kinds of issues.

The entire rework of the bed was lost in the last save, and other save files were loading with missing textures or default spheres. The last working save was about 1.9 GB , with the room used in version 0.1. But that’s still a problem because the scene is too big and could cause same issue later, even though I cleaned a lot of unused objects, the size remains. And there doesn't seem to be a way to clean out those hidden deleted objects or transfer only the active ones to a new project.

So from now on, I’ll keep the room in its own clean scene, built from scratch, and import it into other scenes as needed. It’ll be much more optimized, less laggy, and save me a ton of time in the long run.

It’s a bit frustrating I spent hours detailing that room and now the bed but it’s also a bit fortunate that I figured it out now. It could’ve become a much bigger issue later, and there’s not much info out there about this kind of problem. Also, I think the new bed looks much better, so in the end, it turned out to be a good thing.

I’m already halfway through rebuilding the whole room from scratch. As you can see in the picture, this is what it looks like right now, the bed now feels more inaccessible for the goblin and also more practical for future scenes.

You can take a look at the old scene and the bugged version to compare.
