Coffee Scales Question & The Aldi Winner

First up - the time has come to buckle up and take a look at the world of coffee scales once again. (The last time was... frustrating.) There's obviously a lot more choice now, out in the world. I'm curious if there are sets that you'd like to make sure I definitely check out. Do please post a comment of the make/model, or like a comment if someone has posted what you were going to post. I figure I'll probably choose 10-12 for the video.

Secondly - congrats to Mike from the UK, the winner of the Aldi machine. May it bring you surprisingly tasty espresso!

It may be too late but the upcoming Bookoo Themis *Ultra* is spec'd to be waterproof. I know I want a waterproof scale.

Paul Gee

https://acaia.co/products/umbra-lunar?srsltid=AfmBOootBmvdEoCMKZyUQs3DdqtGatktzPLF6P-gNCOX4czN8O1sG013 There was a recently announced “display-less” acaia umbra. Wonder if this is just a ploy to lock the customer in their ecosystem

Alexander Serikov

Bookoo Themis mini scale

Ramin K

I used the Timemore Black Mirror Mini and it's been great for the whole time I've needed it! Good size for espresso, pourover and travel

Tim Resch

I feel like the Hario scale is the baseline against which to measure, so would love to see it included.

mcsp

Subminimal Subscale! Looks so cool and practical

Susann Widjegaard

Greater Goods Digital Espresso and Coffee Scale. It doesn’t have a timer but is very small and cheap. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07SJTXGN7/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=sl1&tag=xristiantj0e-20&linkId=ab072c76d85e66b2d10a57b9f72e2e3e&language=en_US&th=1

Parker Lyman

I'd like to see how the Maestri House scales on Amazon compare to the more expensive ones.

I use the Greater Goods scale, but it's important to note that it has an annoying "feature" built into it, which makes 10 gram increment measuring difficult: https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/RA341PDNODJ2Y/ref=cm_cr_srp_d_rvw_ttl

The Wren

Also please do the “Varia Aku Mini” that one looks super promising with high precision and only 13mm height.

ruph

Greater Goods Precision Scale. It’s my first scale, bought mainly because it was at a good price, but not so cheap as to be useless.

Charles Hodge

The Earl Nano are a good little set of scales

Luke Hickson

At the moment I am using Wacaco Exagram on the go and DiFluid Microbalance at home but I am planing to buy: - Wacaco Exagram PRO and - Subminimal Subscale So I am wondering what are your thoughts.

Aljoša

Acaia Lunar. C'mon we need at least one over the top scale in the mix!

Jay Berringer

Rhino Coffee Gear Pocket Dosing Scale Its a small inexpensive scale good for travelling and use with aeropress and it was my first scale when I got into coffee and I still have it

Wombat

Weightman espresso scale. Small and cheap but definitely good for the price!

william.j.martz

Timemore Basic 2 for pourover No brand buy on Temu for espresso

Legorose

Ooh, if you could cover the budget end of the market that would be fabulous!

Daniel Cosby

I just use a basic CDN scale that does weight and has a timer. Use it for pour over, weighing coffee beans for single dose grinding, timing espresso shots, and checking espresso ratio every so often. Nothing fancy going on here 😄

Wayne

Thanks for doing this James, I believe the kettle video also needs updaing since so many have taken inspiration from the Stagg The scales I'd recommend 1. Acaia Series (Lunar, Pearl, Pearl S) 2. Varia Aku, Aku Pro, Aku Mini 3. Decent is launching their Half Decent Scale, It's in beta but John can get you one 4. Fellow Tally 5. Normcore 6. Hario 7. Timemore Black Mirror 8. Bookoo As you evaluate these scales it would be great to compare how they fare on integration. The Acaia scales are awesome but the company doesn't open the source for integration and folks at decent have to workaround a lot of stuff to make sure it works with the app. There are a lot of interesting insights on decent diaspora as they are developing the half decent scales. People think Acaia is expensive for the heck of it but the BOM to get to the same quality as the Lunar adds up.

Ali

This is my go to scale for pourover. It's slightly to big for my espresso machine. It's under $30. It's Bluetooth, the app is great. It's by far the best no name scale on the market. I have a bookoo scale for espresso but I like this one more. I'm buying a new espresso machine and whether this scale fits is going to be one of the factors. When I bought it, it was on Amazon and it was under $20. But it looks like they are sold out on Amazon. I probably shouldn't have mentioned it on reddit so much. https://timberridgeoutdoorgearhub.shop/product/digital-coffee-scale-with-timer-and-bluetooth-3kg-0.1g-precision-for-espresso-and-pour-over-rechargeable-black_lcd-display-B0CPM2Q856

Joel C.

The Lamido Mini I've been using now for a few months, and I'm absolutely shocked at the accuracy, level of functions, and packaging on it. It's been absolutely wonderful, and at $25 USD it's a steal. https://a.co/d/hO34tgJ

Steve Nackers

https://sigmacoffee.co.uk/products/timemore-black-mirror-mini is the tiny version of the popular mirror-it’s got a timer, flow rate and excellent accuracy plus different modes for different brews. Also rechargeable and great for travelling. Packaging was sublime and it’s my go to now plus is very affordable. It doesn’t like magnetic fields like iphone magnetic cases and if it ever has a fit, switch it off for a few mins and it’s back to normal -if using clever dripper it’s worth using a light plastic tray to fit it on…. see what you think

James Nash

Drop everything and let's have a look at Gaggia Classic GT!

Mihalis Chatzis

I was in the market for a new scale a couple years ago (my kitchen scale of 10yrs bit the dust) and landed on the Timemore Black Mirror Basic 2. I'm really pleased with it, though my needs are quite simple as I just brew with a V60. Wasn't too interested in the flow rate stuff in newer models so I skipped that. I definitely didn't want any smartphone functionality as that stuff will have an EOL long before the scale itself stops working.

Austinfounde

Bookoo Themis Mini, and a few of the cheaper AliExpress variants like K112, KC230 etc

Robin Sandborg

I bought one recently. I'm an espresso novice. Very easy for me to use and it fits very easily under my Profitec Go 100 naked portafilter

India McMillan-Dickman

How about the Subminimal scale? It's a cup which makes to two decimal spaces, also measures in ounces. Most importantly for me, it fits under my portafilter without whistling it about. It is designed to also accept the hot coffee. So far in really enjoying it

India McMillan-Dickman

The Bookoo scale and the related pressure sensor and phone app.

Mark Wrangham

Timemore Black Mirror, has much faster refresh rate than Hario and seems to be as accurate, plus it's relatively cheap, It's been my daily river for a year now.

Łukasz Fidosz

https://subminimal.com/ The scale from them - curious if the design also comes still with precision and is practical

JP

I really like my Eureka scale for espresso! Nice and smal and feels pretty solid for the price

Taco

My coffee scales broke and I just picked up some cheap soehnle 0.1g precision scales for some 10 or 15 euros in the supermarket with intention to get something better after research. So far 4 years later I'm still using those, although i tried a couple of coffee scales (one broke) another got sent back. My point is that when researching, reviewing we all tend to overdo with criticisms and search for perfection. But imho it's very important to highlight- which ones of them "just work" for the price that does not break the bank. Because I believe that 200euro is the price some pay for the grinder or even the whole setup and while important to have an use, scales only make a small impact on the workflow, and zero on the coffee taste. And sometimes simplicity just shines- because who like the scales which take seconds to power on and how many people actually use an app every time they brew. IMHO it would be great if you included some simple inexpensive solutions too

Tomas Ka

For espresso I am using the scale from eureka. Not the faster in terms of showing the exact weight but small enough to fit under the Linea Micra. Four pour overs I am using the first gen Acaia pearl. Works like on the first day 👍🏼

Jonas

I appreciate that those who make espresso need a scale that is small/thin enough to fit the scale and a cup under the group head. For pour-over folks, however, absolute size may be less critical. So it may be helpful to test/compare two subcategories of scales, one subcategory strictly for the needs of espresso makers, and a second subcategory for pour-over folks. Further, for the pour-over category, I would be especially interested in scales that have a weighing range that could allow its use for other kitchen weighing needs, say a range up to 1-2+/- kg.

Michael L.

I use the cheap ones and curious to see how they stand up against Acaia and other premium devices. I've seen a few YT'ers use the GDealer so know I'm not the only frugal brewer. I've been using both scales below since 2020 so can attest to their longevity. How accurate they are or feature-rich.. well, I'll leave that up to James. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01E6RE3A0 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07XY15THS

mclardass

I have this one and I would love to see how bad it is compared to the big brands.

Henrique Felix

Hario V60. Dull and dependable. Has an issue with the number 15, but otherwise good and reasonably priced.

Anthony V. Dominello

I'm still using my original Hario scales for pourovers and haven't really seen a compelling reason to upgrade. I was even using them for espresso though it was a tight fit under the portafilter. I recently bought some cheapies off Amazon for travelling, brand is OBest if that means anything. They seem fine but I gather longevity is an issue for these cheap scales so we'll see how they go. They fit better under my portafilter so will probably do espresso duty at home.

James Pinakis

The Fellow Tally Pro.

Johnny

It would be interesting to see if the last lot of smart scales have improved their apps since you did them, just a brief overview obs.

Steve Wilcox

For a another “wild card” cheap scales: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005506842372.html?spm=a2g0n.order_detail.order_detail_item.7.b78af19caj1SGX&_gl=1*kco9ok*_gcl_au*MjMxNTkyMzU3LjE3MzY4MjgyMDQ.*_ga*OTI1MzY2Njg1LjE3MzY4MjgyMDQ.*_ga_VED1YSGNC7*MTczOTQ4NTYwNi40LjEuMTczOTQ4NTcwNi4yMi4wLjA.

Damien Armstrong

This one is affordable (22€) and has precise scale, with charging, and is very easy and logical to use. It's a smart version, with an espresso and drip program. I recommend it for use and testing. I use that one in parallel with another one at a triple price, but this one is my favorite in everyday use. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006047109992.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.293.11b018025icvss

Robert

I have the “Timemore black mini” (not nano) which I am very happy with and bought at aliexpress for $40. It is only 16mm high but has enough width and depth to be used for both espresso and pour over. It is responsive, has flow rate, timers and fancy features like auto-timers, etc. No enshittification (no app, no bluetooth, etc.).

ruph

The Half Decent scales please

Glen Wallace

The Varia scales

Eric Mathisen

This is very timely! I am on my 3rd scale in under a year. I'm trying the Normcore Pocket V3, which I like so far. I also liked the ZeroHero Mini, but it wouldn't accept a charge when the battery died, so that made me gun-shy about getting another one. This is a common problem in the 1-star reviews on lots of scales. I don't mind spending money on a scale, but even the $100 scales have a lot of bad reviews. Why are good scales so hard?

Justin Long

I actually enjoy the process of using my phone to track my shots. I have the Decent scales and I really like them. They are cheaper than the other expensive bluetooth scales but they do have have some issues - their scale (couldn't help the pun) is a bit large, the touch buttons are annoying, and the display is difficult to see from where you would be standing to use them. But functionally they are great.

Adrian Amoroso

May I suggest the Maestri House KC200. Thanks

Simon Lovely

great idea James! although I, myself (well... I think of us) very much enjoy your weird or special adventures, which brings more to us, than "just a product review", the space is evolving. pretty slowly, at that, but still evolving. there seems to be no perfect or at least ideal scale. I rock an Eureka Precisa (BT version). it was perfect (did everything and rather cheap), up until I received my Robot, which it was too big for. I welcome a round in this department!

Abel Suri

I'm interested in the Hario Polaris scale. In general, I'm more interested in scales that do not require a phone. Unless the app adds something extraordinary, I don't really want to have to fiddle around with my phone to brew a cup of coffee.

Jesper Wisborg Krogh

Please include something like this: https://joefrex.com/products/xwt I think it is also available under different brand names (like Weightman or Forhome).

Urs

I use a Maestri House KC200. Very curious how it stacks up in comparison to others. I bought it because of its small footprint and low price.

John Hudson

Me too, it's crazy how long it lasts. My only gripe is that it is a little slow to respond. I'm wondering if the v3 is better.

Lucas Hipkins

I mainly bought it because it’s rechargeable, but I feel like I’ve only had to charge it twice in 5 years, despite using it every day. Must be a huge battery in there!

Ryan Monro

Brewista Smart Scale 1, 2 or 3 would be great

Lucas Hipkins

Very curious about the Hario Polaris scale with its ratio-based measurements!

Lucas

Salta kitchen scales i use for pourover, and a no-brand pocket jewellers scale for weighing coffee (Salta scale has +/- 2g accuracy, jewellers scale is +/- 0.02g accuracy). Works well for me, but cumbersome, since I need 2 scales to achieve 1 goal of making coffee!

Dave

Rhino coffee gear scales seem simple and no fuss. No bells and whistles, but they just work. I have the dosing scale, but I'd like to see the bench scale or brewing scale tested against the bigger names.

Macca

I have the Hario V60 Drip Scale, and am not that happy with it. Issues that I'd like to see tested on alternatives: - turn on time is really slow in comparison to my regular kitchen scale - button 'presses' are finicky; the lack of tactile feedback and intermittent operation means it takes me a couple of attempts to start the timer or tare the scale.

Richard J Letts

*ALL* the Timemore models! Including the mini.

Isaac Church

I have been using the latest version of a neoweigh (NW-KS1000B) and gifted one to my sister too. I am holding out a little longer before a bigger splurge on a new scale and hoping you'll be more thrilled about one this time too.

Natalia Rodriguez

Brewista Smart Scale, II & III ... and maybe their X Series Scale, too? I've been using the Gen I Smart Scale forever now and would love something more reactive/quick (and maybe more precise) - But upgrading always felt like paying mostly for "smart" features I don't need. I love the simplicity of the Smart Scale I - even though it's called smart, it has no app integration and a perfect manual mode. So with Brewistas new iterations, I'd hope to get something without the madness of apps, yet still better...

Leif

I went on to make my own, so I would love to see any options in spirit of DIY.

number27

I’d actually love a small series. Best scales under 50/under 100/ smart/ for espresso/ for pour-over

Odin1eye

I just upgraded to a Fellow Tally Pro, would be interested to hear your thoughts.

Matt

I have the Greater Goods scale which I've enjoyed. It's quite large, so setting it onto my Gaggia is a bit awkward. Conversely, the size is nice for pour-overs since I can fit many different-sized carafes onto it

Carter Robertson

Last year i bought a small coffee scale from aliexpress the "Fuego Kitchen Coffee Scale". It cost less than 20€ and is a great addition to the travel coiffee set. Also spare the acaia getting more scuffed up.

Valentin Olpp

Mate, I literally use a set of scales from Lidl. Though I brew filter 99.9% of the time, so I'm a coward

JJ McGuckin

I've been curious about the MantaBrew scales for a little while given how different they seem to other scales on the market. Are the modules that are interchangeable just a gimmick or do they actually offer helpful features?

Luke Smith

I'd like to see compared a timemore scale. I have been using the black mirror nano for 3-4 years now and it has been great, but never had a chance to compare it to other "pricy" scales. Would be awesome to see!

Neko

Bookoo is an obvious choice. Subminimal Subscale less so, since it’s kind of limited as a weighing measurement cup … but I’m thinking to pair it with a weighing espresso machine (Meticulous), and I think it would be a great outsider addition to the lineup!

Joerg Reuter

Me as well!

Bryan Yeung

I’d love to see you review the bookoo and maybe see if there is something similar that can be used for pour over. Any info on the persistent “weight loss” issue with the Timemore scales and any fixes would be useful. Also I’d love to see head to head testing between some of the Acaia scales and the weightman $10 scales that folks on the Hoffcord love. After Lance’s video, I am starting to think the Acaias are a whole lotta hype considering how cheaply made the innards are and I wonder whether they actually are any more accurate than the weightman. Your scales video is the right thing and the right time for this weird coffee person, so thanks James for this and all you do!

Sam Lieberman

My bookoo arrived today and it seem so much fun

Andrea Capani

Very happy with it so far. Love that it does the math for me.

Ryan Murphy

I have the original Timemore basic scale and I'm curious about the Basic 2.0

Eric Davies

Are you happy with it so far?

Bogdan Lupu

Please include scales that fit two cappuccino cups. I have a timemore nano and should have bought something bigger. I would like a smart scale as well but they are all so small….

maarten

I’m also very interested in seeing the Half Decent scale. Curious if it will be a good Lunar replacement.

Kris Kelly-Campanale

Would love to see how a Wilfa scale stacks up to the rest.

Thomas Bratberg

Yes, I'd love to see how this compares to the competition, both above and below its price. Fellow Tally Pro Precision Scale

Dan

I bought a secondhand Acaia Pearl a while ago and enjoy the workflow so far. However, the TARA button is a bit frustrating… I’ve heard that the Timemore scales offer a great value-for-money. Bookoo scales are uprising as well. Though, Lance pointed out (today or yesterday, I think) that multiple people complained about unresponsive scales.

Felix

Timemore black mirror mini!!

Mitchell Rothstein

I’ve been using an Aliexpress scale with 0.1g accuracy, timer, and a 5kg load (works for kitchen stuff too). Would be nice to have such a budget option included too. edit: link here https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007336433603.html

Jan

Non-smart scales that can do both a filter brew and be used together with Robot or Rok would be nice. Cheap-ish options I can recommend to people without looking insane. 😅

Samuel Tegenfeldt

Half decent scale if your able to get one in time

Ian Munro

I just recently purchased the Fellow Tally Pro…would be interested to see your thoughts.

Ryan Murphy

I don’t have a specific model or brand in mind, but comparing a, lets say, mid price model of around 50€ with a top tier model like the Acaia

NikiH93

Nice! And sure, it's pour over focused.

Andreas Bork

I got this one too! I use it for pour over coffee. At least in my case its too big for the espresso machine.

NikiH93

I just got the subliminal dose cup scale and I love it.

Michail Kastellorizios

ive been using one too, would be nice to see a comparison with something in the acaia price range, cause yeah what’s the point

mszczk

Maestri house ec312 is pretty Lux at a solid price.

rafi

Tchibo Coffee Scale with timer, 25-30 € would be my choice. Probably not popular and fancy enough for this test.

Andreas Bork

I have a Acaia Pearl (1. Gen) and for Espresso a Felicita Arc which is a nearly exact clone of the Acaia Lunar with a different case and a better price point. But I believe meanwhile there are better choices on the market. Bookoo and Timemore scales seems to be nice for a lower price.

Zappy Zwo

I have the neoweigh scale -- which is almost identical to versions from maxus and weightman. It might be good to group the ones your review into basic and premium. But wait: how can there be such a thing as a premium scale??

Sherman Dorn

I got the Eureka Coffee Scales, they seem to be a reasonable middle point between extremely cheep and extremely expensive. My only critique would be that it's way too easy to accidentally switch from grams to oz, and the first time that can be very confusing ...

Heinz N. Gies

I have two scales, a Timemore Basic+ and a Varia Aku. They both gradually “gain” weight when i weigh beans, eg 24.0 g soon registers as if by magic say 24.5…24.6…etc. and the opposite with pourover water weight, say 50 g for a bloom eventually becomes 49.7…49.4…etc. What’s up with that?

Patrick Daily

Bookoo Themis Mini and Timemore scales! Basically a lot of people with machines like Profitec GO are looking for a the lowest possible hight because the clearance is unfortunately quite limited so please find as many of those as possible (below 1.5 cm would be great).

KrzaK

I have 2 acaia lunars (older and newer models) and a small acaia pyxis (I think it was called). The latter is really cool and perfect for a traveling setup. It comes with its own little aluminium case which is fantastic. At home I do almost exclusively espresso and the lunars are suited perfectly for that. Travel I use a comandante, and delter press and the pyxis is a perfect accompaniment to those. I love that the lunars can weigh to 1/100th of a gram and that’s how I use them.

Lazaros Sotiropoulos

I prefer a scale that can be calibrated although having it be a bit easier than my TIMEMORE Basic 2.0 would be nice. Mine was off 2g at the low end out of the box.

Paul Gee

Did I win?! 🤔🤞🏻

Mike Hansom

I’m not sure if it’s me?! 😅🥳

Mike Hansom

I just do pour over and have a dirt cheap set of Edasion Coffee Scales off Amazon which only cost £10… batteries have last ages so far, but can sometimes reduce weight by 0.3g randomly while measuring out beans

Phil Nicholls

And it fits under the Cafelat Robot nicely!

Rok Pregelj

Maybe the weighing cup/scale from Subminimal called Subscale?

Kamila

This aliexpress scale is really affordable and is great at timing espresso as it starts the timer only after a certain extraction rate. The battery does run out quite quickly and it's fussy about the usb-c cable for charging. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006863773664.html?browser_id=f6755324563146539a81c05a217fb1b5&aff_platform=msite&m_page_id=dwkuiptcecavwlhk195005121aaa9b15eafa577f56&pdp_ext_f=%7B%22order%22:%225302%22,%22spu_best_type%22:%22price%22,%22eval%22:%221%22,%22orig_sl_item_id%22:%221005006863773664%22,%22orig_item_id%22:%221005006047109992%22%7D&pdp_npi=4@dis!EUR!48.42!22.76!!!359.49!168.96!@2103985c17394670718958833e4554!12000038553131490!sea!SI!0!ABX&algo_pvid=e9dcdb82-d4d7-4af7-ae71-d63c3affa581

Rok Pregelj

I make pourovers, stovetop mokas and turkish coffee. We also want to be able to use the same scale to weight food ingredients, and postal packages. In our case there's not a size requirement for an espresso machine. We're very happy with the Sur la Table digital coffee scale (SKU 8598872). It accurately weighs from 0.3 g to 3.0 kg, it can display metric and Imperial units, it has a timer, and it's compact, easy to clean and USB C rechargeable. No excessive software/automation to complicate my morning pourover ritual. $49.95 USD.

Ron McDowell

Please look at some of the newer scales that work for the Cafelat robot

Char4100

I have MiiCoffee nano scales; use them with my Europiccola. They are very affordable and pretty accurate, do everything I require them to do. PS: I tend to only use them in the manual setting

Jim Lister

The Flair scale.

Jeroen de Meijer

+1 for the wacaco exagram (pro). Portability is underrated in the coffee world, but having a small portable scale makes a lot of stuff so much easier

Fabricensis

I love the acacia scales. Durable, strong and precise. But the price is just huge. It was the first scales I have bought and I don't regret it for a second. Recently I wanted to buy another one. But a smaller one and I was eye balling the acaia lunar. 230 euros 😝 But then... I stumbled upon this beauty. The Felicita. Small for under an espresso mug. Big enough for a portafilter (don't call it a piston guys, come on!) And... super fast! Please review it James. I really think it will be a winner. It is a serious Lunar "Killer" for this price. Only 160 euros.

Kai Yasuda

I use a Timemore black mirror mini with my Bambino Plus. Fits great, and it’s the best coffee scale I’ve ever had.

fluffy

I'll just second the people encouraging a look at the cheap AliExpress scales. I have a pair that cost I think 8€ delivered and it's tremendous. Definitely not an acai lunar but it has sent my two other kitchen scales to an early retirement and for the price I really can't complain. So a "haul" of the top x interesting ones on Ali would be super interesting.

Oliver Martinsen

Was coming to coment on the Difluid one too.

Bruno Barão

Seconding this. I love my black mirror mini, which I got in a bundle with my Sculptor.

fluffy

I have had the Fellow Tally Pro for about a year now. I use it daily and love it.

Eric Misbe

Timemore make decent scales

Carsten Junge

Would probably not work that well with an espresso setup, I only drink filter

Frederick Vanbrabant

I use a “ hoto smart kitchen scale” it’s cheap and looks good

Frederick Vanbrabant

I'd like to see the Bookoo Themis Mini Coffee Scale in there.

Paul Matthews

I’ve had the BooKoo mini for about three months and think it’s great.

Chris Ryan

I'd be curious about that Manta WeighMaster that Instagram is always targeting me for

profdracula

I use the Acaia Pyxis because it fits perfectly in between the legs of my Cafelat Robot

Vincentvdh9

About a year ago I purchased some 3kg/0.1g scales from Aliexpress for the extraordinary price of £5.80, including tax and delivery. I received them within a week. My expectations were low. I've had a few digital scales in my time, so I was expecting a slow read, an inaccurate read, poor battery life, and other annoyances. After using them for v60/clever for a year now, I'm really, really happy: - they are more than responsive enough (more so than my oxo scales) - my calibration weights confirm they're generally pretty accurate, but more importantly, they're sensitive enough to actually measure 0.1g increments, which is the important thing - there was a super annoying beep, but even though it didnt say in the instructions, if you hold both buttons down, it turns it off - the touch buttons work fine - the timer works fine - the battery lasts a long time and charges through usb-c it's definitely worth grabbing one or two of these cheap looking aliexpress scales. For that price, it's really really difficult to justify anything in triple digits.

Ryan Flanagan

MHW-3 Bomber Mini would be good for a cheaper alternative

Ben Childs

I'm in the market for new scales, so I think I'll hold off buying for a bit... Really, I only need something super thin that measures weight and time 🤷‍♂️

Glen Lowry

I already gave my +1 to the timemore black mirror mini. But for the video I would love to see different categories (bare scales, scales with flowmeter, scales with BT and app). These should roughly correlate to budgets classes as well.

Coen Wouters

I've got the timemore black mirror pro. Not sure why people spend hundreds of scales

Adam Carter

+1 i have a Timemore black mirror mini as well. Love the form and function. The flow control works wonders on controlling pour overs and monitoring espresso flow.

Coen Wouters

Difluid Microbalance TI, Timemore black mirror nano, and MantaBrew Weighmaster

Vincent Brisebois

The ‘half’ decent scale is coming soon.

anthony bloor

The only scale I found would properly fit with my bambino plus was the wacaco exagram, which has actually been amazing - it's cheap, the batteries lasted over a year, it's consistent, and it's easy to use. It deserves a plug I think, but also would love to know if there's anything comparable out there? If I was going to replace it, what should I replace it with?

Briony

I'm particularly interested in some of the super cheap mini scales that would fit under a classic Flair, and which you can find on Amazon or similar places. These might be under the brand name "SearchPean," "Maestri House," "Cafe Metric," or "Eravsow." They're in the $35usd range, and frequently seem to be the same basic scale branded and sold by multiple companies. Beyond that, I'd also be kind of interested in the MHW-3Bomber mini scale, but it seems a bit bigger. Mostly, I'm just curious about how usable these mini, extra cheap scales are these days for sometime like timing an espresso shot.

Directly after your smart scale video I went out and bought the smallest, most basic scale I could and it's been serving me faithfully ever since. Amazon says no longer available but it is tiny and accurate to 0.1g best VFM coffee product I own "SEBSON Pocket Scale": https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07XDBVP82

I dont have a specific scale suggestion, but lately I've been interested in how I can optimize a travel sized kit with my Switch or Aeropress, so any travel or mini scale would be interesting to see

Kenny

It's not a scale to brew on… but I'm super curious about the idea of a scale dosing cup like what subliminal came out with: https://subminimal.com/products/subscale

Bookoo Mini, acquired recently, it's phenomenal

assassin_co

Timemore Mini since it’s quite convenient for both filter & espresso

The Fellow Tally would be interesting -- seems like it's helpful without getting in the way. Are you specifically looking for app-enabled scales?

I use BEURER KS 36 scale since 2020. It’s a cheap(20-25€), low profile, and seemingly indestructible. It comes with a calibration weight. The local specialty bar uses one without a fault for 5 years now for espresso. But, it’s a spice scale by design, so no timer.

I would like to see the Bookoo scale. My Amazon cheapo will not last forever, and I have considered the Bookoo when it's time to replace.

Subminimal subscale and as another from this category the weigh cup from flair. And also the normal brew scale from flair.

Hello James! Regarding coffee scales, I am frustrated as I do both espresso and V60; my pour-over scale is too big to be used on my espresso machine. I don't want to have two scales, one for each method, nor I want to spend €400 on my dream scale… Thus, if you could look for affordable and versatile scales, this would be great. Thanks!

Ben

I’ve been using the Hario V60 scale for years. Super reliable and even survived a couple of floodings after some aeropress mishaps

I've heard there is a timemore set now

It would be interesting to include a no name scale from AliExpress as well. Maybe pick up the one with the best reviews?

Jason

Also, I noticed some usb c scales only charge with older cables that have an usb a one the other end. Kind of annoying as I have to keep that cable around just for this scale.

Jacob Alexander

I would be curious about your thoughts on the Acaia range of scales and the Bookoo scales that Lance Hedrick recently reviewed. I would also be curious about the Timemore Black Mirror in comparison to those.

Jo.Comics

I am interested on the Bookoo scale. I have the Weighmaster. That is interesting, but not really ready for prime time.

Please include the Hario v60 scale as a budget model! Still using it to this day and it serves me exceptionally well, but I'd love to know what I'm potentially missing compared to it. (or what's wrong with it)
