One More Thank You

With the final factory tour of The Decaf Project out today, I just wanted to thank all of you again. This project was only possible to make because of the way the channel is funded. If we'd wanted to do this any other way then we'd have needed to either put sponsors on videos or simply make worse videos.

The Decaf Project is a really important project to me. Bringing more people to decaf while also encouraging more roasters to pay attention to it, has been the goal and I feel like it is having an impact - though I'd love to hear your experiences on that front. I'm also delighted that we were able to get these companies doing the processing to pull back the curtain for us. Historically they've been very closed so in every case we had pretty much unprecedented levels of access to what they do and how they do it.

We knew these videos would not get millions of views when they were released, but we think they'll be a long-term value to coffee drinkers who want to know more and deserve access to the information. We deeply appreciate your support, we're proud of what we've made and I hope you can have a little pride too, in what you've enabled.

For those joining in on the tasting, I look forward to seeing you there! It should be a fun final chapter to wrap this whole thing up!

Best,

James

Hello James. I did this live and it was fun and educational on so many levels. Much appreciation. How do I turn in my scores for the tally?

Ed

Also would like to ask you all if for you the Swiss water ran a bit faster than the others??

juanpresso

I want to echo my thanks for the initiative! I think is amazing and a rare opportunity. Given the lightness of the coffee I did Pour Over with all 4 to compare them side-by-side but will try them on espresso too. All 4 tasted different!

juanpresso

I have started tasting the decaf coffees and imho the decaf method does impact the taste of the coffee, so there is that. I have only made one cup pour over reference and one cup of one of the decaf coffees.

Carsten Junge

One more kudos: I find the way you took the complex systems and chemistry, and disseminated them in an easy to digest, and entertaining fashion made me think of Bill Nye. Your impressive knowledge of the coffee world, and the way you articulate that in a way that we can all understand and enjoy without being patronizing in the slightest really harmonizes with the way Bill Nye operates. So, thank you again for all of this and please, keep doing what you're doing!

Paul

I'd like to add my voice to "the choir " of people thanking you for this incredible undertaking! Learning how the various processes work and then finally being able to directly taste the differences is absolutely perfect!

Paul

Thank you spending time and energy making this video. I do hope that roaster and providers will see that there is demand. I have a few friends who basically had to give up coffee because medically they could not have much caffeine and they hated the taste of normal decaf. They love the taste of coffee, but physically had to give it up due to medical reasons. Some pretentious people act like you’re not a true coffee drinker if you don’t drink caffeinated coffee. I actually would argue that those who actively choose to drink specialty decaf are more of a true coffee drinkers because they’re drink it for the flavor/aroma, and they are not doing it to get a caffeine high

James, you are welcome! Welcome to our dollars and support. And THANK YOU for taking that support to grow in a conscious way to provide better content that grows specialty coffee, making it more accessible, just as you envisioned and stated your intentions from the start. It's been a joy seeing your channel grow from the start, and you've obviously been quite an inspiration to the whole community. This decaf project is the start, not only of improving specialty decaf to become more accessible and supported (thank you, I've been wanting to see this growth!), but also a new start of larger, more influential projects.

I was planning on doing a cupping, which is typically used for side by side comparisons and I think what James would recommend. Plus, have you ever, by chance, brewed a decaf espresso? It usually takes quite a bit adjustment from your typical settings so you'd be trying to dial it in with a limited amount of each coffee. Cupping solves that piece as well :)

Mike Ouellette

Thank you James, for being open-minded and sharing this project with us. Nearly every drinker I've ever known would immediately dismiss decaf on mention - I hope this becomes a classic, a reference for people to learn from in the future.

Wtcher

I changed my perspective when you identifed decaf drinkers as the purest appreciators of coffee: the ones who literally drink it only for taste. I support your cause!

Jeffrey Synn

I’m so regretting not having jumped on the opportunity to buy a tasting kit. I did not expect them to sell out in a matter of a couple of days here in France. The videos have tickled so many memories of children’s “how things are made” programs - I am sure that the folks in Bremen would have instantly understood what you were up to if you had said “I’m doing something like Die Sendung mit der Maus for coffee lovers”!

Andreas Vogel

It’s always ok to “just” use a pour over. Yours, A pour over drinker.

Andreas Vogel

Thanks James

Pointrob

Thank you James for doing this massive project for us. As one who primarily drinks decaf for health reasons, I really would like more companies to invest in it. My kit should be here by Monday, but I am going to go back and watch the first video since somehow I missed it. 😧

Diane Simms

Am so gutted as my espresso machine just died on me, only a few days before I'm due to get my decaf kit. Will I be OK to just use a pour over?

Robert Bye

It's been so exciting to watch your channel grow beyond just gear reviews into these crazy projects. Decaf deserves more attention, really hope these videos make an impact with roasters and consumers.

Brandon Potts

Keep the decaf vids coming!! They've been transformive for me

Sergio

Thank you, I really enjoyed them!

Holly Busch

I appreciate the attention to decaf. I learned somewhere that as we get older we become more caffeine sensitive and I want to keep enjoying coffee without feeling ashamed for doing decaf but also being able to find high quality coffee as decaf.

Anthony Sevigny

The series has been brilliant. Thanks for putting un the hard work to make it happen. Really looking forward to the tasting too.

Christophe Harvey

Seeing the behind the scenes has been really cool. Coffee has become my flavored drink of choice and having the flavor minus the caffeine at 8pm would be nice

M JOHNSON

The thank you in this post is (almost) enough of a boost to my day where I don't even need caffeine!

Dan

Thank you James. this tasting is a once in a file time chance to taste the differences for people such as myself who can only drink decaf. and have been wrestling with which decaf process we like,

Eric Blechner

Thank YOU for your experiments. Such a great asset to the speciality community.

Akshit

THANK YOU, James, really hoping it makes a difference in long term.

Bruno Barão

I really loved the series, the insight in the factories and a possibility to taste the different decaf processes

Taco

It’s an honor to be able to participate in this amazing project.

Sylvie

Ready to join the fun. Thank you for another splendid adventure

John Brantley

So glad to be able to support you and your work. Thank you for what you do for the coffee community.

Sam Marion

My decaf coffee arrived today for the upcoming tasting. Looking forward to it.

Karam Singh

Can’t wait for next Sunday!
