The national situation in the US is hard on me and it's hard on Clem. Her aunts and uncles and their friends have been fighting the good fight for almost a century, and now everything they broke their backs to accomplish--braving police raids and the AIDS crisis and marriage inequality and every other insane roadblock--is close to going up in smoke. Clem is afraid she's been a complacent beneficiary of their blood, sweat and tears, and now it may all come to nothing anyway. She's had the audacity to float through peace time, fat on the loving care of a battered and bruised entity that fought so hard to protect her. Now that the fight has come to her, she fears she doesn't have the courage to take her place among the new and VERY socially opposed leaders and fighters. She's no Alsesta. She wishes so hard that she was half the woman Alsesta is.
Piggy Sue wants to help Clem and doesn't know how. She also knows, deep in her heart, that she could do as her mother demands--leave Clem, find a man, and never say anything on the queer subject ever again--but the idea of abandoning the one she loves for fear of the worst kind of people is disgusting to her. I guess we're in this together.
Frankly this is just how it's gonna be now, friends. Most of the time I'm going to cheer you on with my jokes and irreverence and QUEER JOY (my weapon of choice). And then sometimes I'm going to lament on how old and tired and downright heartbroken I feel. I hope you can forgive me for the latter. I hope you'll stay.
