One of the motivations in my aim to create the WwF graphic novel is to know WITHOUT A DOUBT how every single character, no matter how tertiary, looks and lives their life. I don't want to be stuck in a situation where Rando 1 has to be a cat or a bunny because I need to hurry and finish this panel. We have enough cats and bunnies. Now let's fill out the Sous La Mer cast of the Train Play That Must Not Be Named!
Daylily Plathander (clawed frog): Respect handsome Daylily and her even more handsome name! Daylily is a butch trans girl, and this can be confusing to people--even to Daylily herself, at first. A masculine presenting person, she wondered if she should even bother to come out as a woman. Fortunately, her friend and mentor Icy helped her come to terms with who she is; the world is full of gorgeous butch ladies! As albinism is considered beautiful in the herp community, Daylily is a bit full of herself and prone to run /buck/wild. Icy sometimes has to rein her in so she doesn't hippity hop into trouble's gaping maw.
Ysbaddaden "Pod" Bailey (blue whale): Somebody order a basso profundo? As a calf, all baby-gay Pod wanted to do was sing and dance, but his dominant matriarch mama demanded that he be a man and pursue manly things. So Pod got into football and even went pro, enjoying a successful career. He quit while he was ahead and saved his money (as opposed to snorting it up his blowhole, how reassuring!). As a mature adult Pod does as he pleases, eschewing the closet and joyously selling it to the back row at the Sous La Mer. Pod has a crush on a certain tough guy elephant, and if you ask me no questions about whether or not it's mutual, I'll tell you no fish stories.
Peyton (king penguin), Abigail "Abby" (river otter) and Charles "Chuck" (chinstrap penguin) MacQuarie: A tough theatre chick, her sweet and peppy sister and their biggest fan: Dad! Once upon a time, Peyton's father married Abby's mother (not shown) and they all became the MacQuarie bunch. When Abby came out as Mom's daughter as opposed to her perfect son, Mom took off on the lot of them. Devoted to her younger stepsister, Peyton accepted the role of probably-too-trusting Abby's steward and protector, even in adulthood. Guys try to court Peyton, but she's too preoccupied with looking after Abby and their wacky dad. For his part, Chuck is a genius scientist in the private sector. He makes bank and absolutely treasures his two girls, and he's been know to donate massive funds to charitable causes (Charlie's Children's Hospital being his legacy). And yet, Chuck is far too easily distracted by social media and has a bad tendency to try and reproduce iffy TikTok trends and stunts, much to Peyton's ire. As a loving parent, a patron of the arts and an ally to the queer community, Chuck is all in; feast your eyes on his solidarity bowtie! Dangerous, yes, but Charles MacQuarie laughs at danger! Just watch him attempt to go over the falls in this mostly-empty Costco peanut butter barrel!
When We Fly (c)Kae
The MacQuaries are Liz's characters. Yes my whales have flukes, my dolphins have dorsal fins instead, and we'll talk about it some other time.
