Here we have Glen Larrimore, his wife Sally Van Wald and their daughter, Kittiwake Larrimore Van Wald. Welcome to their happy nest!
Glen is a ring billed gull, Sally is a laughing gull and Kittiwake is their precious adoptive bald eagle baby. I guess it's worth mentioning that gulls with black cowls lose their dark colors at certain times of the year, but I'm not sure I have time for such hair-splitting.
So how do surnames work in the magical land of When We Fly? The short answer is that there are way too many species with way too many social norms for any government to get involved. Say a silverback gorilla wants his clan to have his surname, or a hyena matriarch wants the family to have hers (and if you really want to get crazy, imagine the gorilla and hyena married each other). The powers that be will say "SORT IT OUT YOUR DAMN SELVES". Sally and Glen chose to keep their own flocks' surnames, and they combined theirs for their daughter.
I also should mention that "Kittiwake" is not her original name. Our eagle had such a traumatic time in foster care that she asked her adoptive parents to rename her from the ground up. She's blossomed under their care and is a cheerful chick these days. I don't know if we'll ever find out Kittiwake's dead name. She certainly doesn't care to remember it.
