Helmets on, friends, because it's time for HEADCANON! TLDR: grubhog ranching for fun and profit. Get into it.
The Newtons can't coast on their wartime heroics forever, and they have to earn their keep amongst the locals. Furthermore, her status as a Retired Badass notwithstanding, Yunan needs to be kept busy and active or she'll get punchy and eat the sofa (I may have just described a husky, but you follow). So she and Olivia obtain a herd of grubhogs which, when grown to full bloatation, are good eating and can be sold at market. Speaking of eating, the grubhogs must be driven into the rainforest to feed everyday, lest they devour all the crops (and maybe some slower citizens) in town. Corralling the rowdy herd and defending them from predators will provide the General with much-needed daily exercise so that she doesn't start climbing the walls, shredding the curtains and generally making Olivia insane.
Joe Sparrow of canon fame was the Newtons' erstwhile mount, but I don't think he belongs to them, as he prefers to remain with his mate and mutant children. Requiring a steed, Yunan caught and successfully tamed a giant hornet, which she named Ace. Male hornets are stingless and somewhat less aggressive than the females, which are vicious and cannot be domesticated or even approached. Ace is just this side of domestication himself; he obeys Yunan and knows not to eat her wife and children, but he's not going to fetch a ball for anybody. Ace tolerates very little tack, and Yunan controls him by manipulating his antennae. To the General's credit, hornets are rarely kept by any amphibians, and it's impressive that he puts up with his master as well as he does.
Is Yunan still a grubhogphobic? No. Does she like them? Also no. She certainly doesn't mind slaughtering them, and enjoying a big fat grubhog sandwich with barbecue sauce. To war, old friend.
