Extended Cut! What I Learned from Metallica!

What makes Metallica's riffs the most memorable in metal history?! It's their mastery of 4 part riff writing structure, and that's what we are talking about today!

Riff writing structure is something that I don't see getting talked about nearly enough! I know a lot of people's riffs turn into big long meandering run-on sentences, and if that's you, this is a video you NEED to start writing better riffs today! We are gonna dig through the Metallica catalogue and see what we can learn from some of their most legendary riffs. Grab the TABs below, learn those structures, and jam along with me!

Thanks for all y'all do. Hope you're having a great weekend!

Extended Cut! What I Learned from Metallica!

Uncle Ben! Awesome video! Question for you, do you prefer the Fishman Moderns over the Classics (or any of the signature sets, if you've tried those)?

Andrew Maul

This was just the inspiration I needed for a song I was struggling to write a riff for 🤘🤘🤘

Mike Wisgi

Sick vid once again unc

Joe McKenna

I wish someone would have explained this too me years ago. The breaking it apart thing. Thanks Ben!

Michael Tuggey

I tried the AAAB routine with my stepmom last night. She liked it very nice

Samir A

Maybe sprinkle a little bit of theory into your videos, the musical term for this is form.

Snake

This is exactly the explanation I needed to help tighten up my riffs. I will see what I can put together cause I've been wanting to learn to write better guitar parts. Hell I even went and bought a bass and learned to play that before I tried this ABAB stuff.

Marty

Thank you for proving my point re its fans

NYCM&AHole

You always put out content that I didn't realize I needed. This is solid gold, Uncle Ben!

Anthony Reid

Hey now, I'd say Kirk is a couple of tiers above Satriani, at least on the first four Metallica records. Maybe not technically, but a lot of Kirk's playing on those records is so full of energy and passion and creativity and it really punches you in the face. Satriani is very skilled obviously, but he has never stirred a single emotion for me, not even made me nod along.

Tor

Looks like I need to break out my fish man, but will ignore the lo-pro 🤘🤘 Reminded me that I really need to play some more of the band that got me into metal in the first place. Thanks Uncle Ben 🤘

iDuncan

I can’t get into their stuff. It’s just boring and maybe I could deal with that if their fans weren’t the biggest tools in the world. Also Kirk hammet should’ve paid more attention learning from Satriani.

NYCM&AHole

To me the band stops with the black album. Anything after that is a clone or something.

Sole Doubt

As much as I give modern Metallica a hard time they are responsible for me even picking up the guitar in the late 80s. I wanted to play killer riffs and the rest is history. Thanks for the upload Uncle Ben.

Sole Doubt

I learned that you don’t step in the pyro. I also learned that it is acceptable to have trash cans for a drum kit. I’m gonna refrain from comments about Lars before I get in trouble for being un-pc Sorry will never be a Metallica fan.

NYCM&AHole

Big thanks, UB! I was worried my a-a-b-c was too bluesy for a metal riff. Awesome salsa!

GLG

Ben this is so awesome!

Dave

I was to a friend that 90% (maybe more) of Maiden solos are in Em. His answer? If it ain’t broke…

Diogo Camacho

This!

Ryne G. Schuler

Great video as usual uncle Ben! Next time i'd like something similar with Slayer riffs
