While we're on the subject of double picking...

Hey y'all!

I just remembered an episode of The Lick Doctor that I did like 3 years ago talking specifically about the Oblivion verse by Mastodon! That's one y'all had asked about yesterday, and this is a little breakdown of it. Enjoy!

I like doing these Lick Doctor videos, lemme know if you'd like to participate in one!

I've actually seen that video and I forgot about it. Thanks for the reminder, or maybe that's what was in the back of my psyche

Thanks for the encouragement. I've been playing metal/rock my entire time. Since posting I've been tackling this hardcore and seeing some progress. I just tend to mentally frustrate myself when certain techniques in my head shouldn't be as challenging. But I'll get it. My OCD won't let me quit, no matter how much I beat myself up. I've even created a spreadsheet that has my progress in percentages each time I practice. Visually seeing my progress is a huge help. I have been doing this with all my daily practice techniques for awhile now. Cheers!

How about the intro to Hang Em High by the Mighty Van Halen! Sorry if someone already said that. That double/single picking is brutal.

Sometimes learning a new style or technique feels like being a beginner all over again. If you started off playing a style other than hard rock / metal, the rhythmic chuggy stuff tends to be kind of a foreign feeling. My dad's the same way. He's been playing guitar most of his life, but mostly country & classic rock. He didn't get into metal until recently, & he's had a hard time with the rhythmic picking, but working with a metronome he's gotten a lot better over the last few months. Just keep at it. If you start to get frustrated or feel like you're not progressing, just put the guitar down for a while and come back to it later. I can relate, sort of in the opposite direction - I started learning slap & finger style recently, and it feels like being a beginner all over again.

Ya know, I've always liked that song, but never really thought about learning it before. I was hoping you'd do the next riff, that's the one I can't figure out the best finger position for.

Ugh. Currently very frustrated. Oblivion BPM 132. Knocked my bpm down to 63%, moved it up to 65% and everything falls apart. I think my alt picking is for sh@#. The double pick notes are good, but as soon as I increase tempo for simple alt picking I'm all over the place. I've been playing for many years, and it's challenging not to knock myself. I'll keep at it, but wow this is a punch to the ole' ego.

Any tips on the gallop rhythm greatfully received

Beyond my skill but this is the gold that makes the Patreon platform great- do more!!

I've always struggled to play those "rolling" repeating kind of pentatonic licks that are in a million rock and metal solos, so I'd love a Lick Doctor video tackling that!

Great idea πŸ‘

Perfect occasion to do a request here, I guess!? Something, I wanted to comment since quite a while, but never thought of it in the right moment. Please bring back the lick doctor! Maybe, even I will send you something. Not sure yet. I kinda know how to learn/improve myself. But I love watching these!

That was a very good explanation!!! I dig that doctor!
