Double Picking, Day One: Start HERE!!!

I know y'all want to master double picking so you can crush those riffs and licks by John Sykes (Whitesnake), Mastodon, Jake E Lee, and MORE, right?! Of course you do! Its flippin SIIIICK!!!! But... it can be TOUGH to learn if you're starting off with hyper speed Cynic or Mastodon riffs! THIS is where you should start... I'm gonna show you the technique, the perfect place to start with, and how to practice it and get it down! Still of the Night's middle section is the absolute BEST place to learn, and that's where we are starting.

Grab the TAB below, and snag the practice tracks I made!! On the tracks, concentrate on following those high hats with your double picking. Feel the groove, the way the downstrokes connect with the kick drum. Stay loose and do LESS! Lets go!!!

PLUS, stay tuned... I've got a bonus video coming up here in a few with even more double picked riffs you should learn. These are more advanced and get TOUGH!!! Yeah! Stay tuned!

Is there a guitar pro tab for this?

this helped a lot .... thanks chief.

Great stuff! I think the beginning of the A Fortune in Lies by Dream Theater is also a great workout for this. However, I’ve seen Petrucci change the way he does it through the years. I like the way he used to do at the early days, where he arpeggiates (is that even a verb?) the chords.

Love this. Thank you, Uncle Ben.

What a great little solo - as a kid listening to this I thought it was a cello or violin

more sykes please ben! \m/

Emy Rock

It sure does, or very much inspired by for sure. I adore that song too, one of the best metal songs released in the last 25 years (in my opinions) pure 80's filth

Omg the downward pick slanting!!!! So that’s the magic!

Love this riff. I know you’re not as big on new Ghost, but tell me the middle section on Respite On the Spitalfields doesn’t lift this riff in a perfect little 80s homage section.

Is the "Non Handwritten" tab a reaction to Bradley Hall" "Roast"? I've always been happy with the tabs either way.

One funny thing is that this riff is actually what showed me the benefit of DSP. I had no problems with the speed but once in a while i missed the string after a string hop. So I would only get one note out. I had no idea why and it only happened once in a while, not consistantly. When I started working on my DSP and played this riff I suddenly noticed that I never missed a string. I could play it over and over again without an issue. Thats when I realized what DSP could do for me. BTW: Love the riffbased lesson! <3
