Patreon Only!!! My Brown Sound SECRETS!

Hey y'all!

Just for you guys, a peek behind the curtain at my quest to recreate my favorite tone EVER, the early Van Halen "Brown Sound"!!!

My tone is a bit hotter and a little bassier than the OG, sure, but MAN I'm happy with it! And there's a little secret to nailing it that you'll learn towards the end of this video.... its RAD.

I forgot to put my Plexi and Carl Martin pedal settings in the video, so snag those below.

Enjoy! Thanks for all you do!!!

I want someone to do blower switch vs the EMG active boost pot (still need to stick that part in one of my guitars)

Hee ben! Great video man, good stuff showing us the details on EVH's tone. Now I seemed to recall that you have an EVH 5150 EL34 50watt amp head in the studio. Why did you choose to hunt down the EVH tone with a Marshall instead of just using the EVH amp? Is it for historical purposes (to use something similar to what he used) or is it tonal? I'm curious as I have the EVH amp and loving every second of its sound. Thanks again and keep em cummin!

wes jacobi

Sounds fantastic Ben! This kinda stuff makes me pick up the ole six string. Running through some VH right now! Keep ‘em comin’!

Darrin

By not forgetting all the science and math they learned in school when they weren’t playing guitar

NYCM&AHole

Man, that thing is LEGIT. I’ve got one and it’s killer. I don’t know how UA is doing it!!!

Ben Eller

I am very strongly leaning towards the UA Lion 68 for the brown sound after all the Van Halen content

NYCM&AHole

Definitely instantly hear Diamond Dave coming in, very true to my childhood! Thanks Unc

Matthew Cutillo

That sounds FAQtastic

Matthew Cutillo

Really like hearing the studio set-up details.

Sean O

what would the fractal Axe-Fx preset look like?

Felipe Brockmann

So I get how you’re creating this tone here but can you get same tone using your EVH 5150 el34 3S?

matt eary

So I get how your creating this tone here

matt eary

excellent stuff

Felipe Brockmann

Scratch that found it cool stuff

matt eary

Do you have a link for the blower switch?

matt eary

Thank you Uncle Ben.

Jesse J Covey

Was going to ask this. My opinion is it might sound similar.

Jason

Man, I'm loving that dry tone (wet/dry all sounds great too)!

Hangeth

Oh, yeah! This is the juice, man. This is the good stuff.

Samuel Brockmann

insane tone... ty

Now I’m going to fart around with Amplitube 5 to see what I can come up with….THANK YOU for the cool ideas.

Gregory Taylor

Yeah, that blower switch demo is a little shocking. If we can hear it on the video, it must be REALLY noticeable in the room. I may need to some "maintenance" on one of my guitars this weekend....:-)

Dan Conley

Just found out I need to go out and buy a Plexi :) :D ;)

Jason Perry

Found a converter ;)

Jason Perry

Do I need to go out and buy something made by Apple to view those HEIC files?

Jason Perry

Silver Jubilee…tone bone Hot British….driving the cranked clean channel?

Eric Bullington

What you’re hearing is the amp thru the OX to my Interface

Ben Eller

So the sound I’m hearing from you through my iPad is coming out of your studio monitors? From what I see it looks like 5” speaker. Is that right?

Chuck Saeger

Funny you mentioned the blower switch. My main and backup guitars are wired with the bridge going through the volume then straight to the jack. Never wired them any other way to notice whether it makes a difference or not. The others are more standard wiring schemes and maybe that's why I play those two more than any others.

Rob Hughes

Great stuff! I have a suggestion: try putting a Dunlop Echoplex preamp pedal in front of your chain. It gives your sound that special something bigger wider more articulate but ballsier without the added gain. Set it like 9-10 o'clock. (And I agree with you about the Ox)

Clark Peterson

Sounds great, and a bunch of little extra things I had never thought about myself. The pick, the wiring etc. What an attention to detail ;)

Kasper Beuse Fauerby

Sounds spot on! Slightly off topic, but what would you normally run live in a small club/bar for that tone? I struggle with med to high gain amps (usually EL84s) at those volumes and usually default to a pedal into Fender-ish setup. Any live tips?

CJ

Hi Ben, Can this be recreated onto Fractal FM3? Cheers! 🤟
