What makes him sound so unique is that he plays through the chord changes like a jazz musician, so instead of picking a key and staying there, he chooses notes from the key of the chord over which he's currently playing. Russ Parish (Satchel from Steel Panther) does this also, and it introduces all these notes that aren't in the key of the solo, but are in the key of the chord, so they "don't work, but totally work" to the ear. It's my favorite thing.
