So I don't think this has been specifically explored before - we knew Isaac's mom was dead and that he went to Wizard school to become a wizard, but we never explored why his dad was so against it, why his mom died, etc. It seems like this comic series is pulling back the curtain a little more to show why Isaac went into magic, why his mom died, and why his dad is bitter about magic. It seems here that Baby Isaac's mom got sick with something called Shadow Lung, and his dad has been bitter that not even something as crazy as magic could cure it. Isaac seems to have become a wizard in part to help his mom, even if she died before he could find a cure (because he was a baby).
