I think Val would be a better choice than she's assuming. Well, no, Val would not, but her crew as a whole counts as a single fully-functional adult, so that might a reasonable option. Really it's just that Minnow and Doris are viable parents and Val and Isaac are smart enough to know when to contribute and when to stay out of the way.
