Jack's World

That's just Dean all over, isn't it? It always gets me too.

I think this is a good example of how easily Sam understands other perspectives. Dean spent the entire time not communicating to Sam how he felt but Sam bab watched ( as he has his entire life-- young sibling habits ) him closely enough that he managed to piece together the truth his brother wasn't very readily trying to express. It's awesome to see Sam start to understand Dean's perspective. Here's to Dean eventually trying to understand Sam and getting more of his feelings on their upbringing since they both had to grow up from a young age.

Well said. I totally agree. The part at the end sways gets me, because Dean says he wishes Sam could have kept his innocenceand not saying he wishes "We" could have that innocence. He doesn't even think of it for himself. My heart.

This is one of my favourite episodes of the season. From the Pilot when Sam briefly mentions that they were raised like warriors, I was always so curious about their childhood and was so happy to actually get some insight to what they went through. Far too much was put on Dean from a young age, you are definitely right there. I think he was so calm because I'm going to assume that it wasn't his first experience with something supernatural. He also clearly must know how to shoot a gun too so who knows how young he was when he was taught that. It was good for Sam to hear about Dean's experience as an adult. He of course isn't going to remember a lot from the early years as he was so young but it was good for both of their character development. I love the little moments in this episode too - Dean saying that he would do anything for Sam, Sam apologising for always giving Dean a hard time for following their dad's orders, Dean calling Sam little brother, Dean saying that he wishes Sam could still have the innocence of not knowing what is really out there etc Those are the moments that make Supernatural the amazing show it is.

In the flashbacks, I believe Dean is 9 and Sam is 5.

Well, their plan was a bit flawed in the first place. They didn't want to start shooting until the boy was out of the way, which was likely to mean that the Shtriga might not be vulnerable anymore.

Toasted Toad

This is a really good episode. I love it when we get flashbacks to their childhoods. We get to see a bit of what went into shaping the men they are today. I don't know Dean's age in this flashback, but he was still pretty young. But he was fully aware of what a Hunter did, and knew about monsters. He probably had seen a fair number of monsters, ghosts, etc. by then. He had his own rifle and was trained to use it. So being "calm" was what would have been expected of him by then. Especially since he was responsible for looking after his little brother when John wasn't around. So he wasn't really a little boy anymore. Not in responsibilities and how he probably saw himself. But he was a little boy, and so understandable what happened. You have to be careful and pay attention to what the boys talk about. The Shtriga couldn't be killed unless it was actively feeding, and that is why they didn't shoot while it was crouching over the boy in the bed. It hadn't started feeding yet.

Well, there's a chance you won't like the next one. But you probably will. After that, buckle up!
