Rita was a great queen before Toriel and she participated in the human-monster war where she lost part of her ear in the battle.
She actually doesn't have a good relation with her daughter.
Especially since she hates humans because they took her grandson, her husband, and much of her people from her.
And he refuses to accept that Toriel has divorced Asgore.
