159 - Father Shades of Gilbert (feat. Kevin Vibert) [Whit’s Endless Summer 39]
Added 2024-10-09 06:00:06 +0000 UTC
Kevin Vibert (The Penumbra Podcast) and the lads get kidnapped and do battle with demons as they dive into the neurotic mind of one of the pivotal showrunners of Adventures in Odyssey: Paul McCusker. Topics include the utility of goons, the intricacies of sound design, and why Father Gilbert Mysteries might be the show that finally breaks them all.

The Penumbra Podcast: At the Penumbra, you might follow Juno Steel, a brooding, sharp-witted private eye on Mars, as he tangles with an elusive homme fatale, tracks dangerous artifacts of an ancient alien civilization, and faces his three greatest fears: heights, blood, and relationships. Or you might enter the world of the Second Citadel, where the merciless Sir Caroline must corral a team of emotionally distraught all-male knights to defend their city against mind-manipulating monsters...even the ones they’ve fallen in love with. These audio dramas and more await you in the Penumbra, dear traveler. We hope you enjoy your stay.

The best production I heard from them was Anne of Green Gables; of course, being evangelical, I wasn’t allowed to watch AtLA so that was my introduction to Mae Whitman and she’s amazing in it lol. Relistened to it recently and it still holds up but more importantly it made me realize I related to Anne as a kid because we were both undiagnosed autistics 🥲

Please, Please PLEASE do the Focus on the Family Theater 'the Legend of Squanto" for Thanksgiving. I remember it has the exact same musical lead into the production. I remember it being pretty core to my understanding of Thanksgiving and the Pilgrims. There is a lot of apparent white guy doing native american voice.

Going from Joshua Ilon in the interstitial reminding me of how much I loved Penumbra a couple years ago to how absolutely boring Father Gilbert is was not flattering (love your work Kevin and Harley!)

With the father Gilbert bit I will say it is rather suspect that they depict the villain to be a horrible pervert from or acting mostly in soho, a famously gay part of London.
Like wow he was being clever wasn't he

Excuse me Brian, where’s my fucking mental health check in? My mental health has been HARMED. I pay you Patreon money every month specifically so that you can deal psychic damage to me, but this was a higher than usual amount of damage.
Also, the voice acting on Father Gilbert is really atrocious. Every single character is just…reading their lines in the most uninteresting monotone possible.

I would like to thank Brian because one time the work van's stereo broke and TWOAPW was the only thing I could make out crystal clear on phone speakers over road noise, even with voice boost

Yes the score is the best part imo. I haven’t watched that movie in over a year but I can still hear it super clearly in my head lol.

It hasn't necessarily aged the best, but it is still a great movie. The score is also a banger!

Fun fact: in Japan, Gerbert and Father Gilbert are edited together to make a show with a new storyline like a reverse robotech/macross.
Also I get major Mystery of the Druids vibes from Father Gilbert.

Protestant fiction writers never seem to be able to capture the horror of demons. You need a good catholic for that. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=prBXxurcSqc&t=2s&pp=ygURRXhvcmNpc3QgMyBsZWdpb24%3D

The conceit of generic blind character recalling what she heard is much less exciting when you realize McCusker probably watched the 1992 hacker classic Sneakers (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105435/) which has a much better scene of the exact same idea with a more well rounded character (for the 90s).

I got distracted by Jenny saying “invalid” like that. Modern Americans don’t say things like that, it’s a very 1800s word like for someone with tuberculosis!
Hearing that they made a blind character when they realized they had a lot of blind listeners makes me sad. They could have made her so cool but she only talks about how she’s blind!
I really really appreciate Kevin’s comments about how characters based on identity have to have “something going on” outside of that. I am actually disabled and that’s the way I try to live my life!

The idea of listening to this show in a cafeteria full of students on full blast makes me so anxious. The amount of polite friendly conversations I have with office staff as one of AJ's fucked up art interludes is birthed into my ear. Keeping a straight face as I listen to the Far Cry 5 guy describe a great old one birthing a helicopter at the same time as Lori from the front office tells me a story about her weekend.

Chesterton's Orthodoxy is straight Anglican trash, and it makes sense that McKusker would try to bring the works of Chesterton to life

The whole plot is about stealing the research that the professor already has a legitimate claim on to avoid printing Eugene's name on it when sharing credit is the normal thing to do

Depending on the field, it's not even a matter of "muscling out" but just the academic standard protocol. For example, for biological research the first author(s) are known by everyone as the actual authors and are typically grad students, and the last author or "corresponding" is the professor. Eugene works on science stuff for him, it would be weird and unnecessary not to cite him first anyways

The idea of McCusker having the ability to cast performers like June Whitfield but casting his titular character with some guy he knows who just flatly reads the lines off the script has made me unexpectedly angry.
Also shout out to Brian Deacon, I’ve never seen the free Jesus movie but I did see the also free (in the uk anyway) Peter Greenaway film he was in with his brother A Zed and Two Naughts.

The most ridiculous part of this Odyssey "mystery" is that a professor would have to go to such lengths to steal his students' research when professors, particularly overseeing graduate studies, just have to present it as their own to administration and then use their connections or lawyers to muscle out the student who did the actual research. Seen it happen to a few friends and mutuals, and it's unfortunately an almost endemic issue at these levels.

I grew up with the Focus Radio Theatre Narnia adaptations, to my memory they have the quaint charm of the BBC miniseries but the production has aged much better. Highlights are definitely the sound design, especially the ways they render magic; lowlights are leaning into the racism and Douglas Gresham as host doing his usual craven bullshit

I’d forgotten about them but The Twilife zone Episodes are truly the most heinous episodes in my opinion, traumatised 7 year old me away from doing anything I enjoyed (going to the mall, playing video games, having fun) too regularly. Any plans to check them out? There’s only like 4 of them, but they’re all written pretty spitefully
