Fancy Movie Time #20: The Tales of Hoffmann (1951)

On this episode of Fancy Movie Time with Brian and A.J., the Fancy Lads attend a night at the opera/ballet as they cover Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's 1951 adaptation of Jacques Offenbach's opera/fever-dream: The Tales of Hoffmann. Do the lavish costumes and visual imagination make this film a Fancy Feast? Or does the film's ever-decreasing bag of tricks make it a Failure to Fancy? One thing's for sure: these lads are gonna get FROSTED.

NEXT EPISODE: The Last Picture Show (1971)

I do imagine you guys in wingback chairs with pipes and smoking jackets. For the regular episodes I picture you all sitting on crates on the boat.

more like Fruity Movie time. Because this was the most profoundly homosexual 80 minutes of white guys talking cinema I've ever heard in my life [complimentary]

I was out with a friend once and he was introducing me to new people. "This is Italian Tony, and this is Irish Tom." I pointed to a guy in the back and said, "Who's that?" "That guy? That's Testing, 1, 2." "What kind of name is that?" "Oh, his real name is Mike. He's from the Czech Republic." Thank you to everyone who made it to the end of the worst joke ever commented on this podcast.

I love it when Fancy Movie Time descends into being the Chaos Configuration! Great episode 😁

I paused at the beginning to find the video of the person singing the doll song and WHOA!!!! Amazing!

Just started listening, but had to comment because this is one of my favorite operas. I have mixed feelings about the movie, but I'm still so happy you're doing this one. The 2003 proshot version at La Scala is extremely good, particularly good ol' Bryn Terfel as the four bad guys. Highly recommended: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fm4VvfTcZTQ

Would it be possible to include the title of the next movie to be covered in the description of an episode? It would make it much more covenient for people (myself included) who only want to listen to Fancy Movie Time after watching the film being discussed
