please have Alex Goldman on!!!

God, I hate how they pivot Eugene's and Katrina's point of view. Taking the the science-first straw man character and making him parrot trad Christian talking points about when to date really feels gross. And why does Connie suddenly feel like you should be in your mid-30s to date? They all sound like my parents, and I hate it

By Tove!

1:54:12 - like from the Extra Glenns ?

Noah

end of the episode had me Emotional! at the Focus on the Family Slop

Robert Heilman

shout out to fruitless's episode with jason about the book

Robert Heilman

I had a sad thought while you were talking about bringing back Eugene with AI. Imagine being Katie Lee, and having to read your lines, acting with not quite your friend’s real voice. I imagine they were friends in real life. It would be sad to sound like you were talking to them, but in real life, they are gone. AI will never be the same as having a real person to play off of. Also, I was writing this comment and then the clip of Eugene’s final speech to Connie came on,which makes it worse

RON LUCE!! I've been to so many Acquire The Fire's. I probably invited Brian and his sister 🫠 Also randomly in a small town near Austin I met a badass bar tender & owner who had been a call center volunteer at one of Teen Mania's crazy ass boot camp things. She 100% had been traumatized. Wild rabbit hole that one hahahaha

Rosey Armstrong

its my headcanon that Eugene is now living his best life working at Johns Hopkins and visiting the B&O railroad museum every weekend

titus virginia

Why does Phoebear, the largest comrade, not simply eat the...oh...oh God

Jordan Best

Stojka Whit is like Curly Joe replacing the Three Stooges original Curly after he died. He's low energy and completely changes the character

Jimmy McMillan

As part of the New Vegas demographic I feel seen here.

Sylvie

Herlinger will always feel like Whit to me. The Lads hit it perfectly when he was introduced in the pod, like he doesn't feel mean spirited and just has a warmth. Listening to Hal Smith again was actually so weird and harsh and Stojka is just jarring lmao

Ciara Rhiannon

I stopped listening to AIO in 2010 when the show came back from Hiatus with Whit 3. Part of it was because I was 14, but also for me as a kid the main charm of Odyssey make one was the ensemble of colorful side charecters. As a home-schooled kid without many friends, Odyssey felt like an immersive world full of friendly people I knew. Without Tom, Bernard, Edwin, etc all you are left with are the clunky plotting and forced morals, and Odyssey just felt dead. AI Eugene and archival Bernard really cement the "Zombie Odyssey" feel

Spent some time browsing pluggedin, I think the funniest and saddest reviews are of emotionally complex (Phantom Thread) or just flat out non-literal (Annihilation) movies that Hoose and co. can't conceptualize with their format & tools even when they try to, for the same reason that their descriptions of sex scenes can't actually speak to how sexy a film is because they don't conceptualize eroticism. It's like watching someone struggle with hemispatial neglect.

Elah

Just found out Jules' face was just grafted from her actor

John Her

Only Christian stuff I was taught was Golden Rule and Jesus died for our sins, the end

John Her

I wasn't even raised Christian and I love VeggieTales. Which is weird bc my parents are and didn't even bother teaching Bible stories to us.

John Her

I would like a special version of Cameo that only lets you request audio performances of PluggedIn reviews.

Gorbant

I would like Josh to read every single PluggedIn review into a microphone. His delivery blew my back out

TchankaSidecar

I recall their reviewer of Disney's animated Hercules being just hysterically angry that The Libs were attempting to convert American children to Zeus-ism

FamiCommie

the idea that a medical research firm would relocate from baltimore--where'd they presumably be working out of johns hopkins--to the middle of fucking ohio is absolutely wild to me

zetsubunn

That "filet minion" line during the opening Minions riff got zero laughs or acknowledgment from the rest of the pod, and thay doesn't seem right. It was a very funny line.

FamiCommie

Who are these quip defenders coming down?

Ryan Healey

There are handful of us!

Tom and Joe made me give them money to play their game and now I, Teagan, am anime sickos canon. I'm gonna live forever!

Thank god for soulless robot Eugene and weird not-Whit saving me from crying at work over a goddamned Adventure in Odyssey clip. If that had been the actual actors I might've lost it.

Dergon

I yelled "HELL YES” out loud alone in my office at the mention of Hell Is a World Without You; it's so good (and I wasn't even raised evangelical, only evangelical-adjacent!)

Jack Slagle

I mean those church activities can be pretty sinful as well...at my southern baptist church growing up one of the Wednesday night teachers invented a bunch of games involving household objects and decided to be hip by calling these activities such things as "extreme hanky panky" and "junk in the trunk". My siblings and I were in stitches the whole time.

Grouchiest Marxiest

Wish I could make it to the live show. Unfortunately Colorado Springs is on the wrong side of the state for me and I don't have a car. I look forwards to hearing a recording if you do indeed do one

James Craft

Whit and his son playing Monopoly like it's the revolver scene in The Deer Hunter

Noblesse Oblahaj

The real Saw Trap is Brian getting new guests for Odyssey eps and starting them off with a really fucked up and wild episode lol

Dergon

His voice is sounds so frail and uncertain. Previous Whits had that deeper voice and could easily switch from warmth and jovial to authoritative. Even if what he was actually saying was awful lol

Dergon

Came here to make the same shout-out! A solid joke that got swept under the rug.

Dylan Weaver

Adventures in Odyssey has produced more sagas than a thousand years of Norse civilization

Noblesse Oblahaj

Why do I feel like a FOtF counter-insurgency team will bar the gang from Whit’s End.

Nick Gully

"I mean, you invented *ominous voice* The Technology."

BarFly

Oh my god its distressing to learn that Odyssey is aware of podcasts or escape rooms or even steampunk. Now I know how Lorne Lagorium feels.

BarFly

* they seemed to avoid naming other religions a lot…the Sikh family in Bend It Like Beckham (bad because gays of course) apparently just worshipped “some kind of Indian deity” iirc (I refuse to wade back into that site and actually check.)

Amy Godliman

My ears always prick up when you mention Plugged In as this was really the only part of Focus I was familiar with before listening to you guys, would you ever do an episode looking just at that or is there not enough meat on the bone? No Christian background here but I browsed it out of curiosity when I was a teen and parts of some older reviews still stick in my mind, like The Road To Perdition (where the writer was just still mad about the gay character in American Beauty) Spirited Away (introducing children to “eastern religion*”) and The Hitchhikers Guide (which explicitly mentions god not existing but the writer clearly loved the books and desperately wanted to give a pass…now wondering if that was actually McCusker.)

Amy Godliman

"a large number of you, i know from our demographics, have played fallout new vegas" ya-huh brian

Elah

Just wanted to shout out the nearly immediate and unacknowledged “Filet Minion” line.

Ryan Healey

the rollercoaster i went on from being excited you were talking about AI, disappointed it was something else, sinfully delighted to return to Odyssey...

Nemo

holy fuckles, it’s buckles

Max Johansson

I HATE ANDRE STOJKA WHIT SO MUCH
