144 - Dr. Dobson’s “Wooton Hears a Woo(ton)!” [Whit’s Endless Summer 36]

In preparation for their pilgrimage to Colorado Springs, Colorado, the lads take a gander at what the heck’s been going on in Odyssey in recent years and finally meet everybody’s favorite mail-delivering Odyssian: Wooton Bassett. Topics include the zombification of Odyssey, Focus on the Family’s financial troubles, and sheer terror of watching your childhood hero become a sentient garden gnome.

As someone who grew up in a small, heavily Christian town in Ohio, the 11pm curfew and arrest thing is real. We used to have to run and hide from the cops to go buy snacks at the gas station after 11

Nick Fontaine

love that y'all pulled a knowledge fight and accidentally made yourselves subject matter experts on a niche corner of cursed right wing media

Robert Heilman

Oh don't you "Badum dum" the war and peace joke that's a good one. Also, my home town has a 10pm curfew. I have been in the back of a police car more for curfew than any other "crime" I "committed".

Evan Hawkins

AJ is the whimsically theatrical one (he says things like tumtum) Brian is the righteously indignant theatrical one (Sometimes it's a bit) Josh is the chill one Easy peasy!

Dergon

Will it be recorded?

Zipzapzop

I had The Popsicle Kid episode from chickfila! Wooton episode ftw

LogalogJack

STOP there is No Way someone as unfunny as Phil Lollar even breathed near something as top-tier as 3-2-1 Penguins

LogalogJack

So what we’re learning is that not only is there a specific role to be filled for autism at Whit’s End but there’s severe discourse over who is the superior autistic dude. Love it. Whit forbid the show outlives Jess Harnell too, I shudder to think what the autism void will be filled with next.

LogalogJack

Brian is distinct for me, AJ and Josh are similar but have slightly different pitches and speeds(? I’m not sure the term is use lol), AJ is a bit higher. The context of these Whit’s Endless Summer episodes are very helpful too, since Josh and Brian are the ones who have experience with odyssey lmao

LogalogJack

Yeah I think that’s it! Thanks!

Marty Shambles

If it was an early episode with Jack and Lucy, it could be 29: Rumor Has It? The plot twist is that he like, sells rugs (I think?) and the girl they see in the window is just his homeschooled daughter.

LogalogJack

Ohh my god the memory you unlocked. We only had like three cassettes but I swear I listened to them obsessively because of Nathan Carlson (my one and only true love at age 8). I still remember the RazzleFlabben Island episode where the kid sets loose that absolute menace who does such horrors as tearing the tags off of mattresses. High art.

LogalogJack

He be heatin' on my dome til I wet bulb

Noblesse Oblahaj

Any one else listen to Jungle Jam & Friends growing up? I always listened right after odyssey and preferred it, even though it was the b-tier show at the time.

Noah

The Timothy Center absolutely sounds like something FFotF named after a dead child with leukemia who really liked Odyssey which i would assume is now used to spread the word that gender ideology is poisoning our children. On a separate note I’m very interested in hearing the homophobia and transphobia in the later episodes, if only to see how low they stoop to propagate their ideology.

Alex Anderson

nope this one is in person only

The Worst of all Possible Worlds

Is the live show going to be live-streamed like the last one

Izzy Gil

Out of morbid curiosity, I looked up other things that Paul McCusker has written post Odyssey. I can’t find any clips of anything, but he has Saint Francis,Joan of arc, and Saint Patrick. he also made versions of a Christmas Carol, Les Miserables, little women, and (gasp!) The screw tape letters! I would love to see if any of these are actually good because I like other versions of some of these things I would be morbidly intrigued to see if the McCusker version is terrible.

Elizabeth Power

This Wooton character comes in scabbing in place of Eugene and the 1st thing he does in the story is scab at Whits End. Did Nick miss his shift because he's irresponsible? Or was he doing a labor action because he could no longer stand by and watch Whit poison kids with farmer Toms shitty produce?

Jimmy McMillan

So Josh has the highest pitch, followed by AJ, then Brian. I can distinguish between Brian and Josh easily because Brian has a more throaty voice, but AJ sometimes sounds close enough to Josh that I get distracted. It doesn't help that our generation's accents sound a lot more alike thanks to mass media

John Her

I think I remember the hawk one! Though I think it was from a different show Chik-fil-a was involved with back in the day, after a bit of googling I think it’s from Adventures from the Book of Virtues

Toby

AJ, former Catholic from San Diego, is the one who sounds the most theater-kid-ish Brian, escape room actor from New Mexico, is the one who sounds the medium theater-kid-ish Josh, man about town from Michigan, is the one who sounds the least theater-kid-ish. AJ is a hairy Italian guy. Josh and Brian both look like Lord of the Ring Elves and I can't tell them apart until someone talks

Jimmy McMillan

Love to hear that new adventures in odyssey has the same storytelling style as seventies doctor who

Zipzapzop

It's wild listening to Lucy from Twin Peaks interact with Louis from Ghostbusters. A crossover only possible through the grace of God.

Grouchiest Marxiest

Penny is going to make a cult that ends with a standoff with the ATF.

Skelecopter

Not familiar with the hawk one but I remember the Bigfoot one (called No Bones About it) being pretty funny. It shows a different side of Bart Rathbone

The Worst of all Possible Worlds

That's a salad.

The Worst of all Possible Worlds

missed opportunity in the interstitial to say “15 is the correct number of lettuce”

Soup Dealer

That’s the reason he likes liquorish btw, Bassett’s are a British sweet company famous for their Liquorice Allsorts and their horrible mascot Bertie.

Amy Godliman

“That’s right Brian” is a genuine help in my own ability to identify Brian.

Amy Godliman

If the teaaboo was still writing for them Wooton would definitely have a son called Bertie by now.

Amy Godliman

Now we’re getting into the Odyssey stuff my parents used to get for us from the public library. oh boy….

Soup Dealer

When I was pretty young I used to get cassettes with audio dramas from chicfila instead of a toy in their happy meal equivalent. I remember two of the stories vaguely. One was about Bigfoot just generally I guess and ends with a “maybe Sasquatch is real after all” sort of moment. The other was about Genghis Khan killing his pet hawk for knocking water out of his hand but then realizing that the bird was trying to warn him about a snake’s corpse that was poisoning the lake he was drawing the water from. Since I started listening to y’all’s coverage of AiO I’ve been wondering if those tapes were part of the series, either of those ring a bell?

MilpooL

i'm at the other end of the spectrum where i can picture each of them emoting and gesturing realistically as they talk. i can't listen to the podcast without it becoming like that shrek movie mind tumblr post. send help

BrianAlflordIsGoodActually

the more i think about it, the post conversion group think, sedation, and order sounds less like a cult and more like a pod people situation. im picturing whit or connie handing eugene or wooton a strange flower after they say the magic words to convert

titus virginia

Wooton Bassett (now Royal Wooton Bassett) is absolutely a real place in the UK https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Wootton_Bassett It is a shit hole (source: me. I lived near there briefly)

T Trewhella

Is Wooten a quirked up white boy

Skelecopter

you guys really made the heat dome palpable in that intro. I could feel the heat so powerfully that I smelled burnt toast and half of me went limp

Elah

Uh wasn't Wooton Basset the guy who was working on South Africa's chemical weapon program?

Kapjak

It’s never been clearer to me that Odyssey was a sundown town.

Amy Godliman

Of course they got the name slightly wrong but it's a work in progress.

BarFly

The Timothy Center is where they create and refine Timothys. That's where Timothy Chalamet came from.

BarFly

"Wooton! Wooton! Wooton's all around!"

Noah

Oh I am SO stoked for this ep. I LOVE wooton. I haven't been familiar with his character in many many (many) years, but I adored wooton so much as a kid that in the 4th grade, I sent adventures in odyssey a letter gushing about how much I loved him, and largely I asked for advice on how to handle an argument I was having with a friend. I didn't have adults in my life I felt like I could trust, but goddamn did I trust Wooton Basset 🫡 I don't have it anymore, hut his reply was something along the lines of, "hi Noah, I'm so glad you find so much joy in Wooton! I love playing Wooton, too. As for your friend conflict, talk to a trusted adult" etc etc. such a special memory lol

Noah

Does anyone remember an episode of AIO where some kids think that their neighbors are murderers? I have this vague recollection of listening to this tape when I was a kid and I was wondering if anyone knew what this was.

Marty Shambles

a few random things. I dont know how exactly to parse the idea that the slow paced, inefficient government mail job creates a better, more personal service compared to the highly profitable, free market solution. I assume they just didn't think about it. Also, the combo of Connie not being allowed to feel her emotions/anxieties with Whit saying that "we either believe we are in god's hands, or we don't". i hate that. its bad. That being anxious or needing to feel our emotions is somehow a moral failing. very bad for a little anxious boy. i mean for connie. Lastly, this ep really skewed my Endless Summer graph.

TalkGibberish

Wooten sounds a little bit like the Scooter the catch-a-ride guy from Borderlands

By Tove!

That cold open was mesmerizing.

Ryan Healey

For a moment I thought Jeff Lewis from The Guild went on Odyssey, and I’m very glad he didn’t (assuming he didn’t)

Max Johansson

Jess Harnell is also the most “voice actor” looking mf I’ve ever seen

Max Johansson

also i admit that over the course of listening to this podcast i too have developed a fondness for eugene

Max Graves

did some exploring in the adventures in odyssey fan social circle of that blog and all i can say is that it's crazy for someone to participate in tumblr and still remain a christian heterosexual

Max Graves

Hey they renamed the Underground! I used to get drinks with my boss there Make sure you go to the Rabbit Hole for drinks around the block! That place is sick.

Jordan Y Clementi

I've listened to maybe a hundred episodes

John Her

Gonna level with you guys, Josh is the only one I can consistently pick out.
