142 - Gerbert (feat. Devon and Trinket)

Devon and Trinket (Traditional Scrench) join the lads for some adventures in Christian puppetry as they dive into the rich tapestry of Bible stories and malevolent paint brush gods that is: Gerbert. Topics include UK children’s programming, the militarism of evangelical ideology, and the dangers of giving tuppence to birds.

Traditional Scrench: Your favourite podcast idiots are streaming twice a week, every week, at 21:00 UK time Monday and Thursday. We’re a heavily improvised variety stream with a youtube playlist.

24 Bauer Party People: Sam and Trinket marathon watch 24, taking breaks every 4 episodes to record a podcast. Trinket knows nothing about 24, but she’s wearing a shoulder holster full of monster energy cans to try and get into the spirit of things and she’s ready to enter the mind of the neo-con.

Kill James Bond! is a comedy film review/pop culture commentary podcast about the eponymous English spy, James Bond. November Kelly, Abigail Thorn, and Devon watch a different Bond movie every fortnight in an attempt to give 007 the socialist, feminist comeuppance he so richly deserves. Free episodes are released every fortnight on all major podcast platforms and bonus episodes are released for supporters on Patreon on the interstitial weeks.

Well There’s Your Problem is a podcast about engineering disasters and systemic failures, from a leftist perspective, with jokes.

Ten Thousand Posts: A show about how everything is a form of posting, and how our lives are guided by the only dialectic that matters: good posts and bad posts.

It took me *far* too long to realise that was an interstitial and I was fucking rolling with laughter

Peter Larkin

Also the English dub is fucking hilarious

Zipzapzop

Seeing EIT and this podcast come together is basically all I need in life.

Josh James

Brian’s never been more relatable for me personally than during the brief rant about respect for clowning, I felt that “I’m not doing a JOKE here” in my SOUL🙌🏻

Maple

If you've seen "I Saw the TV Glow", the look of Binney Brush is giving me big Mr. Melancholy vibes for some reason.... don't like that.

Thom Coté

I hope moving swiftly past the relationship between CBN and Tatsunoko represents an intent to do a Superbook/Flying House episode in the future, because the story of that relationship (a successful anime studio obsessed with breaking into the American market, evangelists wanting to spread their ideology to a new nation) endlessly fascinating.

Andrew T. Wilson

Much like Brian Alford, Gerbert should be put to death.

IHateBrianAlflord

oh man, puppet ministries. In Grand Rapids, there was a missions organization called MOSES. We did missions trips to mexico and would do puppets with a pre-recorded skit in spanish. I went on SOO many trips with them, and in retrospect, it was pure torture for me.

TalkGibberish

I listened to 75% of this before I suddenly realised we had the Christmas episode of Gerbert on video when we were kids. I don't know if any show has ever left less of a lasting impact on me.

Sam Milne

fun fact about that: sandi patti has a broadway standards album. her voice is well suited to r&h but she has no idea how to approach sondheim

I have not thought about the secret life of toys for YEARS how DARE YOU

Ray of F---ing Sunshine

gerb your enthusiasm

Ethan Ness

God loves you and we do too

Jimmy McMillan

Jesus CHRIST Quigleys Village is like a repressed memory.

Grouchiest Marxiest

I was NOT ready for the real actual energy of the brush guy.

2007 Christian Rock

I knew this fucker was real. I worked at RBC Ministries in Grand Rapids (Our Daily Bread now) as a broadcast intern and have stirring memories of puppeteers and Christian media.

2007 Christian Rock

The Donut Man’s music is on Spotify in the US, listening to those songs awakens me like The Manchurian Candidate (for God)

2007 Christian Rock

Oh man, I normally know everything evangelical you guys talk about but Gerbert is new to me. Thank you for this 🙏

Nyeaustin

I shouted and laughed in the car when AJ said "at double speed the songs sound like Vampire Weekend"

Adam Kelly

I've never heard of Gerbert before. Is anyone familiar with the Donut Man or Quigley's Village? Those were my christian puppet shows growing up. I'd love to hear an episode on one of those

Jimmy McMillan

AJ, I only know who Sandi Patti is because I have listened to too many podcasts and things about evangelicals. But you genuinely should look her up, she actually has a great voice and in a parallel universe would be excellent in musicals! She is apparently one of Kristin Chenoweth’s inspirations.

Elizabeth Power

"Onward Christian Soldiers" is weirdly enough an English song. I think there's a kind of Military Protestant Culture that died with the empire in the UK but lives on in America.

Kill James Bond Highlights

And by justice i do mean horror.

Majestic Affect

Yessss other people know The Christmas Toy! In addition to just being great, because it was sponsored by Kraft, where you'd normally have commercial breaks, they instead aired unhinged Kraft recipes for "festive" dishes (a.k.a. crushed potato chips mixed with margarine)

Jonathan V. Cann

I am convinced that this episode is just a two hour AJ sketch and that Gerbert never existed.

Max

When I was a kid PBS was still playing reruns of the 70s show The Letter People. I found it fascinatingly unsettling. Just look up Mr. T and his Tall Teeth

Dergon

This made me rewatch one of the Brutalmoose gerbert vids and in it gerbert does sadly say he's adopted, which crushes the theories about the implied puppet human romance. However, it does shine a light on the struggles of a human parent raising a puppet child, which is a common but overlooked element of American culture.

Curtis F.

I can't wait for next week's episode covering Greg the Bunny.

Korax

I had to go watch a Binney Brush compilation... The audio alone does not do it justice.

Majestic Affect

Any of the Boys' Bible Study hosts would make excellent TWOAPW guests. Just putting it out there.

FamiCommie

the vile puppet

Cassandra Banner

Gerbert the pervert

murt pie

I have dim memories of Gerbert that my mind was trying desperately to suppress.

Marty Shambles

Fascinated also by this world where “special needs” meant poor. Like I’m about the same age as the hosts (I think) and it was firmly entrenched as an ableist slur for my whole childhood, if I remember correctly.

Heather

The psychic toll this episode has taken on me and I'm only 30 mins in

Radio Free Tote Bag

I got asked once to help with the singing puppets as a kid. I had an old man puppet with his arms sewn together so he could hold something, found a root beer bottle with the labels removed. Placed bottle in puppet arms and made him take a few swigs during the songs. I was not asked to help again...

Dergon

I really don't like that gerbert is the episode that finally made me subscribe.

zetsubunn

i was in a youth puppet ministry for most of my time growing up. we went to an international puppet ministry convention called I-Fest. still got some old puppets at my parents' house

Bruce

Gerbert was gonna be the basis for the new season of Channel Zero but it was too scary and orange, so they canceled the show.

Dergon

So we are getting the “Gerbert’s Ceaseless Patriotism Celebration” series right? Two episodes a month dedicated to evangelicals christian children entertainment.

Ben Gialenios

Oh perfect I was just looking for something to listen to today while I take the bar off of a chainsaw

Elah

his family came over from Germany in 1919

Nemo

As Mr. Kaiser's appearance was never mentioned I'll continue to imagine him wearing a pickelhaube and a huge mustace

Kapjak

So the Gerbert puppet has the same origin story as the Henry’s baby puppet from Eraserhead, just laying that one out there.

Amy Godliman

Christmas Toy is so good though, no lie.

Ember

Oh... oh no. I had forgotten about this orange creature. Why must you remind me? :-D

Ember

it’s honestly despicable, I should’ve known that this would happen when they decided to cover this topic without a single FP voice represented on the show

Max Johansson

I can't believe the anti-fabricated persons attitudes that they brought to this week's episode. Why don't they go full masks-off and call them socks? On a lighter note, watch Jim Henson's A Christmas Toy. Frozen toys can come back.

MuppetImp

I lost it at "Gerbert wasn't created ... he was found"

Nemo

The skit voice for the paintbrush was so close it took me a while to realize it was a bit

John Her

The Eschaton has Immanentized. Womp
