139 - The Dutch Knight Rises (feat. Scott Benson) [Whit’s Endless Summer #35]

Scott Benson (Night in the Woods) returns once again to Odyssey as he and the lads finally wrap up their three-part coverage of the many spy-games, double-crosses, and hastily wedged in Christian morals of the epic, twelve-part Adventures in Odyssey saga: Darkness Before Dawn. Topics include the wiki-centric writing, the benefits of pirate mutiny, and what it means to grow up believing that certain souls are beyond redemption.

How did a 4hr podcast episode about a Focus on the Family children's radio drama make me cry in the car?

Nick

You guys are so talented! I stumbled across your pod and signed up for patreon after like 2 episodes cause you guys A) actually make content for patreon worth the paywall, and B) you guys put more energy and effort into a podcast than most. It’s goofy, irreverent, but also so thoughtful and constructive. Never thought I’d find something that connects my love of theatre with the need to deconstruct my stunted upbringing among conservative evangelicals! Keep up the great work!! 👏❤️

LizzyBoredom

1) the introduction to this episode is the worst thing you have ever done to us 2) the interstitials/commercial universe is actually amazing and I became genuinely emotional and heartbroken about Loren/Petey. I am more invested than I can say in Loren somehow using the imagination station as a time machine to go back / room of consequences to bring Petey forward. I know you won't do this, because this is the worst of all possible worlds (not the podcast) and we need to get used to not being happy. X

Oliver Tew

Add me to the list of folks literally sobbing because of the interstitials. Y'all are the best out there <3

Indi Latrani

At this rate Los Illuminados is gonna look for the Las Plagas amber under Whit's End

John Her

Absolutely emotionally devastated by the interstitials, going to use my lunch hour to lay face down on the floor. Thank you for helping me feel something again. ❤️

Ms. Charlie

shoutout to the BBC Sound Archive, my fave is "Comedy: Coughing And Spitting - Several men coughing -1980 (7H, reprocessed)". almost got a job there a few years ago but they realised in the interview i didn't know what i was talking about

Nemo

How'd I like the episode? Well, I can honestly say that when I heard Josh on KJB saying y'all had a podcast making fun of Adventures in Odyssey, I never would have expected the show would leave me weeping to an Imogen Heap cover in the grocery store parking lot. A+

Andrew T. Wilson

One of the first episode of this podcast I listened to was about Adventures in Odyssey (I think the Whit Gets Racist one). Then I thought for a long time that the commercials in them were brilliant one-shots loosely connected to the episode. Then I realised that there was an overarching story, re-listened to some episodes and enjoyed them even more. Then this episode comes out with its last commercial and I honestly had to stop what I was doing while listening, blink away something that wasn't tears and take a deep breath. The happy ending for Pinky, the bitter-sweetness of victory, the hope shining through the despair... For one moment I saw the grave in my mind basked in the beautiful glow of the sunset behind a once more idyllic small town. All I can say is Bravo! You made me feel something that I never thought a podcast talking about a dying empire could make me feel. My only hope now is that you will continue Whit's Endless Summer now that this arc is over because surely you can't leave our heroes hang like this. Right?

Alexander Gebhardt

I love any episode with Scott, but just wanted to say that I particularly loved this episode. As someone who grew up listening to this Odyssey arc over and over as a kid, you're right that it both traumatized and entertained. There was something about these more serious Odyssey arcs that made the show feel like something else, that gave a repressed Christian kid the means to engage with "serious" media that wasn't available elsewhere. Revisiting these episodes are wild because it feels like no time has passed, and yet the person I am now and the person who listened to these decades ago could not be more farther removed from one another.

Brandon Chinn

Just wanted to say thanks for Josh's shoutout to I Hate James Dobson (which I am pretty sure was in this episode? If not it was on the Scrench stream at some point). It's a great podcast, super well researched takedowns of Dobson's books. I think Jake and Brooke would be fun TWOAPW guests.

J. D. Harper

Also this should go without saying but this episode fucking ruled as per usual

Beau Baker

Holy shit, I recognize that radio static sound effect at the end of the episode! It was used at the end of The Scary Jokes' song In a Bitter Syrup!

Beau Baker

Something Scott said about this arc ratcheting the tension up to 10 and then having to go back to the normal everyday situations and stories caused me to realize something. This arc is the anime movie of AiO. Big explosive action, questionable impact on the rest of the series going forward. Best to just enjoy it and float along. It should be noted I wasn't a listener, so I could be completely wrong

Tom and Joe made me give them money to play their game and now I, Teagan, am anime sickos canon. I'm gonna live forever!

OMG THE WOOTON DROP LMAO oh AJ the best truly is yet to come

Ciara Rhiannon

I'd be sad that Blackgaard is dead but I Slap Floor

Ciara Rhiannon

Boy, he sure does like Horse Corner. 🐎I remember hearing that voice and wondering why Bart Rathbone was calling.

Dergon

Pete Zaparti...hmm...that name sounds familiar... Maybe somebody should go and relisten to the 2023 Year in Review episode. I dunno, might be interesting.

The Worst of all Possible Worlds

Just finished. There is a new Odyssey fanfic character named "Pizza Party" apparently. Also the lads are going to cover Wooten. Thank you, oh Lord, for these bounteous blessings. Amen.

Dergon

I found AJ’s line at the end of this episode really moving. It’s actually sat in my head the last couple days. I think "take what made this old evangelical art shine and make something better" is some of the best advice you can give a creative person who was raised evangelical and is processing a lot of their early artistic inspirations being terrible, weird, or even straight up evil evangelical art. Take the parts you liked, and do something better with it. Anyway, thanks for that AJ

Josiah Sutton of the Fruitless Podcast

First off, perfect episode, no notes, made me cry at work with the interstitials as usual. It’s so freeing to see this saga come to a close (unless blackgaard’s revenge counts as part of the saga) for my own sanity if not you guys’. Now onto the regularly scheduled rant about my (totally not sexual awakening back when I was a girl) blorbo. I know I’m beating a comatose horse here with constantly bringing up Richard Maxwell but god damn they wasted him in those last episodes. With the canonical fact that he “learned how to sabotage [regis’] remote-control gizmos” you’d think he’d at least have a part in stopping the bombs? Or maybe that’s my fanfic slipping out mb But also with Scott’s idea of Jason and Jack confronting him together would be a perfect parallel to Richard and Whit in Chicago. I just… ugh. It’s so embarrassing having the Odyssey autism instead of something useful like math.

LogalogJack

I'm not all the way through the episode yet, but the Make A Wish talk has reminded me of my high school friend, who tried to use his wish to get then-president George W Bush to resign. They, uh, gave him a drumkit instead.

Fern Slater

I feel like Eugene's VA should have tried to add more menace to "witness to what?"

Andromeda

A 4-hour episode of Whit's Endless Summer, about Regis Blackgaard, with Scott Benson as guest host??? Amazing, loved every minute of it, cried a little, absolutely perfect. Also, idk if y'all plan on covering more episodes (I hope you do), but there are two more starring Regis Blackgaard.....

Adri Tiesinga

Well I appreciate your hard work and diligent scholarship.

BarFly

We haven't found anything about Odyssey in The Dr. Samuel Bultch, D.D.S. Memorial Foundation archive just yet but, we'll keep looking.

The Worst of all Possible Worlds

Yeah just trying to drum up dRaMa (also I'm so sad that AJ is now aware of Wootten)

Grouchiest Marxiest

The instrumental Mmmm Hwhatcha Say really snuck up on me

Ray of F---ing Sunshine

I'd give that last three minutes a listen if I were you.

The Worst of all Possible Worlds

See you in the stars.

The Worst of all Possible Worlds

came to say the same thing. to make me feel emotional at an instrumental mmm whatcha say at the end. ugh

Genevieve R

You've "he'd" your last "hwhat", Whittaker

Ryujin713

How DARE you make me care about your silly little Adventures in Odyssey fan characters

Ray of F---ing Sunshine

I am one of those people awakened by Richard Maxwell.

2007 Christian Rock

This is my favorite thing I've ever heard.

2007 Christian Rock

JERRY.....💔💔💔💔

Peter Paul Rubens' Muse

Less than 5 minutes in here and the opening is some of the realest shit about writing I’ve ever heard

Toby

Regis actually didn't hit the detonator; it just happened that at that exact moment the most moral army in the world (tm) heard that there were tunnels under a place where children congregate and did their thing.

Sylvie

The conclusion to Lorne's story meant something to me.

Sylvie

Even better would be him being told that and expressing disbelief that someone could be so altruistic to a blackguard like him

John Her

An alternate motivation could have been releasing Ruku on the black market to force rapid worldwide efforts for a cure. Not just capitalism but dooming thousands to save his own life. Might have made the antidote possibility more ironic and sold the whole evangelizing thing as having faith in humanity

John Her

I want to point out that even if there's another source of Ruku that it would take a while to find it. Also, mining in Odyssey would become massively illegal as soon as black market Ruku shows up on the NSA's radar

John Her

I kinda feel like calling the kids' group the Israelites is even more offensive because it sounds like they're child soldiers

John Her

How the hell are these parody bits so good? Like I'm actually emotionally invested in them much more so than the actual show despite jumping in at the tail end

John Her

I cannot believe that I felt genuine emotions about Petey and Lorne. The bits in this entire 3-part series have been incredible. I thought nothing would top the play opening, but the AJ conversion sequence was just as good, then the conclusion of the Lorne commercials totally blew me away. Insane work, 10/10, absolutely worth every penny of my Patreon money.

Max

Great work y'all, with every episode the name of your podcast feels less and less accurate ❤️

im so daddy i havent slept in a year

They migrate this time of year.

Grouchiest Marxiest

2:25:07 feeling good 👍

Josiah Sutton of the Fruitless Podcast

Had a Mormon come up to me attempting to evangelize to me while AJ was talking about how horrible a view of the universe evangelicals have (around the 3:43:18 mark). For reference I live in NYC why are there fucking mormon missionaries here!?

Ben Gialenios

one day i’m a mother; one day i’m a lover. what am i supposed to do?

The Worst of all Possible Worlds

(1:38:36) Oh my god y’all unlocked a deep memory for me…I think I heard that same Hats song on a high school retreat in the 2010s ☠️

Angela Woodack

Looking at the run-time and making the Sickos "yes! hahaha yes!!" fave

Jon

Gay love can pierce through the veil of bad evangelical radio shows and save the day

Ninon

I was genuinely gripped by that second interstitial scene and caught completely off-guard by the delivery of "That is a lot of Whittakers" hahaha holy fuck. You've outdone yourselves again.

Elaine Åhlfeldt

So is this the end of whits endless summer?!

Grouchiest Marxiest

Holy shit it’s still going

Marty Shambles

Kony95 is also for me.

Grouchiest Marxiest

There’s so much in this episode it’s hard to know where the start but let me just say it’s nice to hear from fellow fans of the BBC free sound effects library. I even have one of the original collections on LP, volume 6, good for your many town and country audio needs.

Amy Godliman

I'd recommend reading his love letters to his wife it'll elucidate some things for ya.

Grouchiest Marxiest

I'm gonna have to Google "James Joyce farting" when I get home. Gotta keep my internet provider on their toes!

Dergon

The bits in this episode are insane, and I loved every moment of them.

Rob F

Honestly I didn't even know this show _had_ lore.

Chris M

now I want the video clip of Grossman and the professor and Bart and the Bones breaking into huge smiles as they run through a suddenly empty Odyssey towards the video arcade, where they tear off their shoes and dance on the sticky carpet as they baptize each other in quarters to Pre-e-e-pare Ye the Way of the Blackgaard

Elah

My favorite Dobson quote is "ahhhhh it's so hot I'm in hell it's burning ahhhhh"

howl's moving pictures by rush

Should I say something along the lines of “This piggy needs special slop,” or something if I make requests of the hosts?

Adam Ghostly

For dumb people with bad memories can you post a chronological cut of all the lorne lagorium interstitials?

Adam Ghostly

At one point I really thought that AJ was going to hit us with another Dr. Samuel Bultch DDS composition for some reason.

BarFly

Okay this James Joyce bit is for me.

Grouchiest Marxiest

you might enjoy this half hour mix i made back when i was trying to become a dj https://soundcloud.com/boerman/josh-boermans-half-hour-mix

The Worst of all Possible Worlds

oh yeah baby. real heads (josh) will remember playing marathon deathmatch over localtalk

The Worst of all Possible Worlds

Oh shit, wonderful. Queuing that up next, thank you for the reminder

Elaine Åhlfeldt

We actually made a supercut of the first two years of interstitials! It's located in the Whit's Endless Summer Collection right here on the Patreon! The video you're looking for is "The Odyssey Commercials Vol. 1" and the specific commercial is called, appropriately enough, "Jerry"! There will be a Vol. 2 supercut coming soon but, honestly, gonna need to take a bit of a breather first, lol. So glad you enjoyed the finale!

The Worst of all Possible Worlds

Ok I really love AJ's Odyssey Expanded Universe, but I need a catch-up on who Jerry was in this ongoing plotline. Was that Whit's son, presumed dead in the actual canon, and what has happened to him? Some kind of borg-ing? On that note, at any point where it seems appropriate, I would love a supercut release of these interstitials to just hear them again in order and uninterrupted. True work of art.

Elaine Åhlfeldt

All this stuff about infrared data transfers outs them as Mac users, who were using that for Localtalk in the late 90s. It was largely supplanted not even by high speed wire but Localtalk over normal phone wire. I set this up in the house as a kid and in retrospect my parents were pretty tolerant of me throwing phone wires everywhere

Typhoon Jim

After this opening bit I'm not sure I want communism anymore.

Grouchiest Marxiest

I straight up repeat a bit here from the SOTN episode but I totally did that on purpose. For art. It's like poetry it rhymes

Scott Benson

Big fan of gay sex, "pernagrapher," and Scott Benson repeating bits.

Dergon

Yall legit made me cry with the interstitial bits. Like genuinely they were funny as hell and still managed to get at my heartstrings. Amazing to see you guys bring that bit to a climax. Great show as always!

Jesse Nealy

Amy Grant apocrypha is just next level.

Nick Gully

Dear God, 18 minutes! We're pushing past a six on the Calvino Scale! The podcast is approaching criticality!

Sylvie

I love this show, but I’d really appreciate time stamps to skip the interstitial bits. Don’t cut them out because I know lots of work went into them, but having time stamps to skip through easily would be helpful for myself and others too possibly.

HollyBroWoo

Is that track in the beginning from Akira?

howl's moving pictures by rush

I mean this in the nicest possible way, I love you guys, but the bits in this episode made me want to die. This might mean they're working as intended, I don't know, I don't know anything anymore.

David

knowing Josh's commitment to craftsmanship and the types of music, he listens to, if he started making some kind of party drug I would be emptying my bank account

Elah

Fun fact: the C of S church in the town where I live held a Seder on Maundy Thursday this year, even though Easter was almost a month before Passover

Max Johansson

i am 20 minutes in and brian is a fucking lunatic

Cassandra Banner

he hwat

Ethan Ness

So having asked for feedback, here's some thoughts I've had: - It's absolutely baffling for a series that is half-public half-locked (Whit's) to have the introductory episode be locked but that's okay you've grown a lot as a podcast - I think I understand what's going on in the Imogen Heap interludes, I try not to think too much about it, which I find helps it sort of wash over me - I had no idea Eugene was converted, does anyone know which episode that was? - I think Goku inflation is actually really funny - Also did Josh say he was Baptist now was that always a thing?

Alex Anderson

When you said 4hrs I came expecting length Not girth. Hell of an opening! And hell yeah more Scott!

Sam Gregge

Well props to AJ cause the first thing I thought when I saw the email was about the commercial. I've become shockingly invested in this running story.

Sylvie

I'm so excited for this !!
