138 - Baby Reindeer

The lads grab their iFoNeS and spam your inbox as they dive headlong into the nightmarish world of stalking and stand up comedy that is Richard Gadd’s hit 2024 Netflix series: Baby Reindeer. Topics include the show’s origins as autobiography, the incredible performances, and what, if anything, artists owe their real-life subjects in a world addicted to true crime.

CW: Frank discussions of sexual assault and stalking.

I started this episode and when you got to the opening I paused, watched the series in two sittings and came back. What a show, it'll leave me thinking.

Caleb Brian

Catching this episode for the first time today so sorry for the very very overdue comment. I just wanted to say shout out to Brian for the content warning in the beginning; there was something oddly comforting about the way he said “we’ll see you next week.” Thanks, Brian!

HollyBroWoo

Wait… this is edited?! I’m not getting this live?!

The thing about Terri saying things like "fancy" -- I don't think it was lazy writing. One takes on the speech patterns of one's locale after a time. E.g., Riley Quinn speaks "Britishly" because he's lived in the UK for so long and it can be a jolt because he speaks with a Canadian accent but what can ya do.

Vanessa Edding

Can't say I was expecting y'all to come out as sovereign citizens. I'm not at all surprised that you are. I'm just surprised you said it out loud

On the bedroom sink: I've been looking at a lot of real estate listings for houses in England recently (long story), and sinks in bedrooms are not uncommon there in older houses, unusually ones which only have one bathroom. You do see them in Victorian houses here in the States, either in what had been servants' bedrooms or in houses which were rooming houses. I live in South Philadelphia, and it was common for families who owned large row houses to rent out rooms, usually on the 3rd floor of the house, so you'll still see sinks there. They not only kept your lodger from tying up the bathroom, but also allowed them to do light cooking and washing up in their rooms. In both the US And UK it makes sense when you take into account that bathing/showering daily has only become common for the majority of the population recently, really after WWII. Before that, you washed your face and brushed your teeth and went about your day. People who bathed regularly bathed weekly.

On a future award winning true crime podcast, Horses He Loved... "It was a warm Spring day in May, warm but it's the South so it'd have felt like Summer in New York. New York, that woke state where A.J. Ditty lived, lived and dreamed of horses... and murder."

Hitlérsátán, my favourite Béla Tarr movie

Tbh I'm appreciating not having the detail inflicted on me. Even hearing there was an interview is, for me, a huge bail out signal

Typhoon Jim

Always figured it was the descendant of the chamber pot/wash basin combo

Typhoon Jim

I'm better now, thanks for asking.

Wilko

How are you holding up Wilko

Noah

Just watched the whole show after listening to this ep. Breathtaking shit. So painful. So devastating. I appreciate listening to this back with all the context I have now

Noah

Sounds good. I might have to commit my eye units to this digital content

Jimmy McMillan

I hate to have to tell you this but, people absolutely pee in those bedroom sinks

Gary Sandow

I also got laid off Josh, I feel yav

Yura

If you've ever had to take the bar off a chainsaw, you've probably messed around with a traditional scrench

Elah

Scrench mentioned!

AetherialPhage

Jesus Christ, all timer interstitial lmao

Radio Free Tote Bag

I had no inclination to do that awful bit until it was the very last thing you said and the awful gremlin in the back of my brain went "ah, but what if we change it slightly in a comedic manner... what then" and so I'm telling Satan to leave me now

Genevieve R

Talking about bedroom sinks, I haven't seen many outside of one room hovel flats, and one that was in a old home I was staying in, that broke during our stay and flooded the kitchen of the house and buckled the floorboards on the floor of the hallway as it leaked though the ceiling

Question for the lads: Richard/Donny have some major chaser vibes which I think explains alotta this weird highlighting of Terri being trans but is it also possible he thought by doing that he was also making a weird political statement against rampant terfism on that stupid little island? It kinda read as this problematic shot at transphobia as well as toxic masculinity and the whole "being attracted to transwomen is gay" attitudes that were real big at this time.

Grouchiest Marxiest

I was going to invite y’all to see a fancy movie in the City with me next month, but now I’m terrified of how that would look.

Rob F

The condom thing about Calvin has changed, thankfully

Elias

It's Turks all the way down!

Grouchiest Marxiest

Love me queen ( sized-bed ), love me sink. Don't like it? There's the door.

Noblesse Oblahaj

Is this some sort of iterative bit, is this a dispatch from the alternate universe containing Greater Slavic Caledonia Dmitri from John O' Groats

Typhoon Jim

I wasn't expecting to get hit by the most Ukrainian Scottish accent I have ever heard this early in the morning.

Noblesse Oblahaj

I have to say, I'm a bit conflicted about episodes about VERY recent media (not like Outer Wilds, which has been around long enough), especially if it's very popular (and well made). On the one hand, I might've missed BR if you hadn't put a spotlight on it, on the other hand, I now HAVE to stop the podcast and watch the show first, because I don't like spoilers.

Wilko

Logged in just to comment that if you're stuck in renteer hell in the UK, the sink in bedroom is weirdly common. You used to find them a lot in dingy-er student houses and they do a great job of adding to the layer of damp on everything else over here!

Edward Cardall

Assume you guys might cover some of the updates on this on the ladscast. Obviously there is the interview and the internet did find “Martha” very quickly, but also the attempts to track down “Darrien” by the true crime brained have been pretty devastating for those at the pointy end of accusations.

Amy Godliman

I'm really liking this episode, but I feel that the preface should have included a little more detail. All I can find is the Pierce Morgan interview which to me comes off as noncredible
