Patron check-in: how y'all doin?

Hi everyone,

It's been a little bit since we made one of these posts. What's new in your world? Any new up and coming podcasts we should be checking out? Any guests we should be trying to get on the show? How was your eclipse?

And, as is tradition, a poll for engagement:

What was your favorite premium episode of the year so far? Let us know what you liked about it in the comments!

Comments

I think I agreee here. So hard to choose!!

Rosey Armstrong

It's easy enough to say I'd probably listen about whatever you guys wanted to cover, but my answer this time was Sleep No More. I'm definetely a theater scrub but I think a lot of the most recent episodes I've enjoyed the most have dived into that space on what feels like a slightly more academic level. By sheer coincidence I listened to the episode on The Visit just before you released the one on Buried Child. Coupled along with what's been going on in Whit's Endless Summer recently I just wanted to say how much I've been appriciating hearing you guys act and write stuff, even if it's just silly little skits. Brian's one man show is going to live in my head rent-free for a very long time.

Edward Cardall

I got so angry about the poll that I didn't even notice the questions. Would a combination Starship Troopers/Helldivers episode be feasible? Or just Starship Troopers with references to Helldivers? Since the game doesn't have much to talk about in and of itself

Nathan Woods

This was honestly difficult to pick, which is funny to say with the wide variation in subject matter. But I eventually decided on Heaven Is For Real in part because an outsider-view curiosity into radical American Christian media was one of the things that originally piqued my curiosity about this podcast, and hearing you talk about that stuff with all the insight granted by your set of personal histories always feels so rewarding. That often also goes for what you have to say about stage production art, by the way. I'm a theater pleb who's listened to the Hadestown Broadway ensemble album about a hundred times and explored very little else in that broad category of art forms (I think the full list is We Will Rock You as a young child, one production of Chekhov's "Happiness" and one locally produced surreal metacommentary on Lolita adaptations), but your passion for the subject always make me want to find time to broaden my horizons. (I'm still also super stoked for Zero Escape coverage if that ever climbs your list though, praying to Eris for a 2024 Summer of Gaming second act)

Elaine Åhlfeldt

I subjected my family to 1960s Supermarket Sweep videos thanks to you monsters.

Gorbant

I didn’t even know what immersive theater was at the start of your Sleep No More episode, but by the end I was FASCINATED. You all talked with so much thought and experience and I loved hearing everything you had to say about the artform and the show itself. It seems like the theater episodes are less popular than the religious ones for some people here, but I adore you guys going off on tangents about theater production, as someone with no theater knowledge. You’ve really gotten me to engage with things I never would have even heard of otherwise. Same with your Buried Child episode! There’s clearly so much passion there

Edith the Solitary Goblin

Heaven Is for Real and Sleep No More were easily my favorites here - the former because I'm just a huge fan of any of your christian media episodes, and the latter because I lived in NYC when Sleep No More was a big deal and never understood the appeal. But the biggest surprise of these was Supermarket Sweep - I've never watched that show much but was surprised by how much I liked the episode!

Erika Carmona

I think Haus of Decline would fit right in as a guest

Elah

I just wanna thank y'all for being the eclipse glasses through which I can examine the "Christian" media that molded the brains of literally everyone I grew up with- all the kids in my neighborhood got the AiO sampler tapes from the parents who worked at Chick-fil-A. My hometown was super evangelical but my parents were irreligious, and I was always curious about what everyone else in middle school was listening to and reading while I was nose-deep in the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Keep it up!

Jack Slagle

I second this suggestion. I also come from a Catholic family that was obsessed with 7th Heaven for some reason.

Adam Ghostly

I would love a series on 7th Heaven, my very catholic family was OBSESSED with that show and my sisters modeled their lives around it. I’m not allowed to bring up what happened to the cast at the dinner table.

terf-b-gone

Loved all of these episodes, tbh, but for different reasons. New podcasts I’ve been digging: I’ve been hooked on Anime Sickos since Josh’s appearance on that show, and look forward to you getting them on to guest with you. Otherwise, Ben and/or Huw from Bad Gays might be good guests to poach, particularly as they’re threatening to do an episode about Stephen Sondheim in the future.

The Token Detergent Rinser (British)

I’ve really been digging the variety. Sleep No More, SuperMarket Sweep, Donkey Kong, Alan Wake, HIFR—it covers so much ground. If I may make a recommendation: would really like to see y’all take on some Alan Moore at some point

Jacob Dallas

I liked Sleep No More because I learned about a kind of theatre that I didn’t know existed.

Marty Shambles

Sleep No More was great because it's something I've experienced myself while whacked out on drugs/alcohol and I think you really captured that feeling

j$

Tough decision between Heaven is For Real and Sleep No More. However, Sleep No More eked out as a fascinating look at a piece of theater/dance I’ll never get to see.

Liz Hansen

Hard choice for me between "Heaven is for real" and "sleep no more," but ultimately picked that latter because it was fascinating hearing about this strange subculture around a play I had never heard of. I would love to hear Liv Agar on as a guest

Paula Sulpice

I can't pick! Love them all for different reasons.

Trying to find my missing father

I liked Alan Wake 2 because of the contrast with Alan Wake 1, and because of all the insight into story and the discussion of it at a mechanical level. And it's really nice to hear y'all talk about something you like on occasion. But I did enjoy the Jacob's Ladder fever dream journey into unreality of Donkey Kong

Noblesse Oblahaj

I'm throwing my vote in for the Alan Wake episode. You guys tearing apart bad - or at least questionable - writing in any form is one of the best parts of this podcast. Will Menaker from Chapo and Hesse from Seeking Derangements teamed up for a crossover podcast roasting/praising a series of films. I'd imagine they'd be pretty far up there in terms of quality guests if you'd be able to snag them for an episode or two.

Adam

No eclipse on the blighted isle, really enjoyed your Alan Wake 2 episode. Nice when you guys get to talk about something good, and in this case surprisingly good with some interactive theatre on top. I’d suggest you take a look at Kentucky Route Zero if you haven’t already, it’s a great game and also the developers have a good GDC talk about the way they looked at theatre for inspiration. For guests I know you guys are probably already trying to get Abi Thorn on, perhaps to delve back into another Hamlet related thing (Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead maybe?).

Amy Godliman

I think I missed it what was it referencing

Izzy Gil

Omg yesssss literally my favorite thing

Izzy Gil

I forgot the eclipse was happening over in the US as I live in the Foresaken Isles (the UK)

Alex

You should definitely go on/invite one of the guys from boys bible study maybe to discuss a terrible Christian documentary like whatever happened to the human race or gods of the new age

Zipzapzop

a real list of banger episodes. I also liked Buried Child, and getting to hear you guys act out the parts. that made for a good episode. None of these are new or up and coming, but its who ive been listening to recently. For musicals/plays, Off Book is an improvised musical podcast who recently pivoted their show to become about their musical writing process. Could be interesting to hear them talk about one of their favorites. As for other podcasts/guests. The Behind the Bastards folks maybe. I know they have an older episode about Focus on the Family/James Dobson also Knowledge Fight? Or the QAA podcast? all sorta in the same "conspiracy" realm I do enjoy the God Awful Movies podcast. they can be a bit... r/athiest-y, (especially their old stuff) but are generally a good listen.

TalkGibberish

I would also love to see an episode on moral Orel I’d love to hear y’all’s thoughts on it

Izzy Gil

The eclipse was fine vt was packed and you could hear the entire state scream during totality which was pretty cool

Izzy Gil

I drove six hours for the eclipse, only for thick clouds to roll in 10 minutes before totality

I wanna marry a lighthouse keeper and keep him company

You know what could be really fun? If you (as a group: Mickey Mouse, AJ, and Josh) did an episode on James Bond with the cast of KJB.

Jordan Y Clementi

the eclipse was sick, thanks

Teddy k.

The depth of interest all the hosts have for the topics they bring make every episode pop. When I think of the value between any of my subscriptions I put this podcast at the top.

mclonergan

Oh my God, yes!!

Dergon

You guys have made me see the art in theater and movies. Something I barely understood before. If I could make a small request Blackadder Goes Forth

Kyle Reesman

Since becoming a patron, I’ve moved to the extremely Finnish part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I can confirm they are built different, but y’all should come see for yourselves. And please let Josh cook, I want the Thief episode(s) 🙏🏻

TchankaSidecar

I love your deep dives like Supermarket Sweep and I would love if you could have Devon back for a premium episode as well - they mesh so well with the group, much like November, and it's pretty clear they crack you all up too. The ideal!

Josh Brown

I want to fund a Titan A.E. episode 😭

im so daddy i havent slept in a year

heaven is for real because i love when you guys do christian shit but also super market sweep (i love a deep dive)

Connor Schaefer

I picked Alan Wake 2, I've been appreciating the video game episodes more and more. Because of the podcast logline and y'all's perspective overall you do a great job of digging into the historic, artistic, and industry context of the games you cover in a way I feel I'm usually missing from games media.

Elah

Gonna come back to this, but Gamefullt Unemployed is finishing their X-Files series might be a good time to take a long view with them

tristan krout

As a former theater kid, your theater (especially musical) episodes are always my favorite so I smashed that sleep no more button immediately. I think you could have a very fruitful crossover pod or great guests with Jake and Luisa from Why You Mad. New York comedy and anticapitalism meets New York theater and also anticapitalism

Rory B

Please do slings and arrows season 3

Cam

Went up to Maine to see the eclipse. It was a truly awesome experience. It also turns out that my Galaxy S23 Ultra can take some good eclipse photos.

Michael Notkin

Eclipse ruled. My friend anointed a sword with oil under it, no clue what his plans are.

CS

Some real bangers here, but the AW episode turned me from "person who played Alan Wake 1" into "person who will play Alan Wake 2," which is nothing short of a miraculous transformation.

CS

While the eclipse "happens" in space, there is a specific path on the earth where the moon completely blocks out the sun called the path of totality. It creates this cool night in the middle of the day effect. This one hit a lot of the United States which is why everyone was talking about it.

Michael Notkin

hang on are eclipses a localised thing? i either am in aoteroa and so didn't get to experience it, or i slept through it and am also in aoteroa still help me i dont understand how anything in this world functions

Benalish Transexual

How dare you make me choose between these

Nathan Woods

I could see an interesting crossover between you lads and Collective Action Comics Podcast . Also please consider doing Derek Jarman's Edward II! Otgerwise I'm well .

James Lunt

Would love to hear you guys cover The Great Comet/Oak fiasco a few years out, I think there’s a lot there worth discussing

nate

You should try to link up with the duckfeed network boys (Gary and Kole) to talk FromSoftware games or immersive sims like Thief or Thief 2. A follow up to the Dark Souls episode would be amazing

Fatt Mox

Sleep no more for me was the best recent episode. I’m not a theatre guy at all (I hate musicals and nothing will disabuse me of that sorry) and started the episode thinking immersive theater sounded silly, but ended it fully convinced it was actually super cool and wanted to experience it myself.

Ben Gialenios

You should get YouTuber Noah Caldwell-Gervais on as a guest. Extremely talented at writing about video games

Dergon

I love the podcast, I just have one thing that I have to mention. In your quest to watch all Pearl Harbor related content on the day of infamy. You must talk about the movie "the Final Countdown."

Killercotton Shisno

I got the see the eclipse and tried to take photos but I was so flustered I have no idea how they came out. Hopefully the film comes back soon. You guys should have KJB on to talk Bond or some other spy movie

Yura

Truly, like a list of banger episodes, each one of which made me say "Yep, this is why I'm a patron"

Jordan Y Clementi

That or do a Warhammer 40k episode, I think it's be very fun to hear y'all react to the Worst Father of All Possible Worlds

Dylan Wignall

I don't know how to convey the infernal roar inside my head through text but otherwise ya know I'm doing okay. PS thanks for the advice on RFTB Brian things are going swimmingly Long Distance

The Goon Chick

As a poor country boy and fan of immersive games (such as Thief 1, or Thief 2), I found the deep dive into immersive theater to be very interesting. I would love for y'all to cover another show like that. And also have Brian share more of his stories. And more guests with hot NYC theater goss.

Dergon

Eclipse was a magical experience - I saw it alone in the woods in NY. So glad I went. Also IMHO you should get Jazz Emu on to talk about comedy music, I think thatd be a fun vein to mine

Dylan Wignall

Why are you making me to this, Brain?

Jordan Y Clementi

This was a hard choice, but the only podcast that got me to check out the thing everyone was talking about was Slings and Arrows season 2.

-Think of Something Better

Tbh y’all have been on a heater and I’ve enjoyed all of them a ton. I don’t even play video games but I rock with those a lot. Not really directional or directive feedback but keep doing good shit!

William Brito

All of these are such good episodes how are we supposed to choose😭

Dr. Arroway

I really appreciated the mountain goats reference in heaven is for real. More mountain goats references please!

Noah
