Fancy Movie Time #11 - Häxan

On this episode of Fancy Movie Time with Brian and A.J., the Fancy Lads crack open their copy of the Malleus Maleficarum and kiss the Devil's butt as they cover Benjamin Christensen's 1922 silent horror essay: Häxan. Do the stunning diagrams and exquisite production design make it a Fancy Feast? Or does the lethargic pacing and outdated understanding of human psychology make it a Failure to Fancy? One thing's for sure: the Devil walks among us and he is an incorrigible little SCAMP.
Every time people reference having to watch Birth of A Nation I am kind of defensive because I’m like, no it’s a great historical document for US history teaching! And then I’m like. Oh. Ooooh. I see.

thanks so much for this episode. I watched the movie a while ago as part of catching up on folk horror history but I couldn't get anyone I know to watch the movie so it's nice to hear you guys discussing it!
your talking about the devil clause growing pubes reminded me of the children's movie The Peanut Butter Solution. if you haven't seen it, you should maybe check it out, though I haven't seen it in like 25 years so maybe it's awful? but! the titular solution is concocted to grow hair on the head of a pre-teen boy whose hair fell out from getting too frightened. he puts it on his head and the next day his hair starts growing super fast. he eventually gets kidnapped cause his hair is magic for paint brushed but the pubic hair part is that his buddy is anxious to grow up so puts the peanut butter solution on his crotch. eventually there's a shot of his ankle with hair peaking out of his cuffs! it is pretty weird. also I don't think they ever address it again. I don't think he gets kidnapped for his pubes and I can't remember if they solve the overgrowing problem for either of them. (they must?) anyway, I actually think about that part of that move semi-regularly but this episode reminded me again!

If you want to make the developing Ira Glass bit even dumber, glass in Swedish is "glas" but we also have a word spelled "glass", which means ice cream.
I haven't really through of a punchline to make with that information, but take it and do with it what you will

my favorite way to play Guess Who is with completely subjective descriptions. "Does he look like a bitch", etc

Good episode! It would be fun to see you do an Almodovar movie. Women on the verge of a nervous breakdown is probably his most popular, but I think a Talk to Her episode would be really interesting

The sexually-gesticulating Devil is one of my favorite shots in any film.

You know what film also has scenes involving bizarre sexual metaphors that are performed by demons? The holy mountain 1973
