summer daze....

Hey everyone, it's been a bit since we did a general-purpose update post. Here's what's new.

200,000 downloads??!

The day we released the episode on Modern Warfare II was also the day we hit 200k total podcast downloads. This is a pretty crazy milestone and we could not be more grateful to all of you who have gotten us to this point. And we're just getting started. As the show grows, we'll be able to try more styles of content and bring you more great stuff.

Gamer Summer is nearly upon us

We've noticed that episodes about video games tend to do really well, so we're going to be focusing on games more this summer. In July, we're bringing a much-loved guest back on to talk about one of their favorite games. And in August, for a very special Episode 100 (!!!), we're finally getting around to reviewing a game widely considered The Greatest Of All Time. Knowing us, you probably can guess which one it is.

Shirt update: still working on it

We're still figuring out the most cost-effective way to get the shirts made and printed and deliver you the highest-quality product possible. Thank you for your patience on this; we'll send out another merch update soon to people who placed pre-orders.

Finally, a poll: why do you stay subscribed to the Patreon?

I feel this and you said it way better than I could have hahaha

I love every episode about any weird evangelical media so much - it makes me feel like I wasn't the only one to experience that shit and it really really helps when y'all add so much info and context with the behind the scenes political stuff that is related to all that (not to mention laughing at it all is cathartic). However I also absolutely love the musical theatre and general movie stuff too. Lastly, I wish I'd mentioned this before but the one time Josh did the political talk with two ladies on school choice was incredibly helpful - I'd love to see more Josh with experts on current political stuff here and there too.

Rosey Armstrong

I forgot what episode I jumped in with, but between the game discussions, musicals, and the deep dive into the weirder evangelical stuff, this hits my niche interests in my queer trans Midwestern nerd heart.

Jay

okay real answer i came from scott benson's first episode about aio (because i loved nitw) and that was my portal into both aio and this show. i stick around because the analysis of all this media is uniquely in-depth and actually has a lot to say about the thing itself but also because yall lay bare the insane machinations of americana that i've always seen and lived in parallel to but never actually had the language or understanding to talk about. yall have gifted me that language and deeper understanding. so i stay subscribed because The Horrors Are No Longer Beyond My Comprehension; i know their names and faces and i can fight them

BrianAlflordIsGoodActually

Came here primarily for the episodes about Christian media, but love listening to everything you guys do. The game episodes are great but as someone who knows nothing about musical theatre I love the episodes covering that because it's like a view into another world

Isabella

Honestly? I came for Whit's Endless Summer and have stayed for everything else. Y'all have great energy and I've really enjoyed literally everything you put out. The video game breakdowns and Fancy Movie Time are my favorites following Whit.

skullfenestrated

Thanks, I need to catch up!

Nancy Carr

Okay but when are you calling me about doing an episode about cyber seduction: his secret life and how lifetime movies created the perfect environment for q anon

Jessie W

I subscribed for the game episodes.

Sarah Hayman

I mostly signed up for games but honestly the variety of topics you guys cover and the way you discuss them has made me consider media I would have never thought about otherwise. I really like the examinations of Remedy and Quantic Dream games, bad games with bad writing that were hyped for their "deep and complex storytelling." It's cool to see that critically examined because I feel like it sold games short on what they were capable of doing. Furthermore this podcast has a fringed flag, therefore it is an admiralty podcast and I do not recognize its authority over me.

Alex

I definitely started listening because of the Odyssey eps. I also had the incredible experience of having that diarrhea ladled into my ear canals as a child...but mostly, yeah it's just fun to listen to you guys talk about anything really.

Henry Martyn

I initially subscribed because after I binged through the free episodes, I was really interested in hearing several of the Patreon episodes (Alien, Disco Elysium, Stanley Parable, RDR2). The analysis of games is a lot more interesting than many podcasts, because of the focus on what goes into making the choices that the games make.

Jeff Martin

Or Deus Ex!

Dergon

calling it now, it's going to be for an immersive sim, like Thief, or perhaps Thief 2,

BrianAlflordIsGoodActually

i stay subscribed because i cannot let the brian alflord hater win

BrianAlflordIsGoodActually

It's pretty hard for a podcast to cover games in a fun and listenable fashion but your games episodes are consistently your best work (theater and Odyssey close behind). Would absolutely love episodes on Bioshock Infinite (kind of surprised it hasn't happened yet) and Borderlands 2, both pretty damn good games with visible flaws that are interesting to talk about. Would also be very very hyped for an Assassins ep cause I adore that show and I think y'all do too.

Jack Drummond

i'm here for goku

Bruce

check out episode 28! we talked about various christian music videos for the better part of 3 hours

The Worst of all Possible Worlds

I was personally interested in the episodes covering games, but that's probably because its a big hobby of mine. Disco Elysium, RDR2, and Last of Us were all excellent criticism on those properties. Your RDR2 episode in particular was spectacular. I've enjoyed all of the other gaming and non-gaming coverage as well, so personally I'd say: Cover what makes you happy. Enthusiasm is the best ingredient and you folks always bring it in spades.

bsushi

There's so much that i enjoy about your podcast that, were i to list it all, it would seem creepy. It's like you used the computer from Weird Science to design a podcast about all my scattered and eclectic interests. You guys are hilarious and insightful, your guests are all great, and even the episodes about things I've never heard of are still entertaining as hell. And while listening to your show *did* unlock DEEPLY-buried memories about also being exposed to Whit as a child, it feels pretty good to laugh about it all now. Also yeah, Thief 2 was great, but a bit too dark.

Craig Sokol

I just love everything about this podcast. I was initially intrigued by the premise of case studies surrounding the media of a dying empire, but I'm also incredibly fascinated by the more religious/ evangelical things you cover as well!

Kenzie Traill

Love the episodes on musical theater and also video games, plus the collabs with my favorite members of the Nate Bethea Cinematic Universe

Autumn Ash

I'm not much of a gamer, but I still try to listen to the gaming episodes. I finally had to stop taffin about and download and play the 2 games I've been hearing so much about. So glad I did, I'm more sleep deprived than I've ever been! You did that.

Luckie

I especially appreciate your takes on evangelical culture because they’re both smart and funny. I’m the weird outlier who would subscribe to a Gilead Lane podcast if you did one! I’d love to hear your thoughts on Christian music in the 90s forward (like those “if you like Guns n Roses you should listen to ______” lists I recall from Christian bookstores).

Nancy Carr

Musicals/theater stuff is the main subject I keep interested for. Also if you're doing games, I'd be interested in y'all talking about the Metro series (like 2033)

Cam

I'll listen to you guys pretty much no matter what but you know I love an Odyssey episode lol I know it would cause too much psychic damage but a WES episode every week in addition to other content would be something 👀

Ciara Rhiannon

But see because they read our NAMES it becomes just SOCIAL, wouldn't you agree Wilson?

im so daddy i havent slept in a year

This is therapy for our childhood traumas

im so daddy i havent slept in a year

I think I joined for the episode about Chess? In any case, I stay subscribed simply for more episodes of the usual show, no matter the topic Also, hearing about evangelical culture as someone from a deeply catholic country is absolutely fascinating in both the similarities and (especially) differences there

Sasha

Same. If you grew up with the Odyssey/Whit stuff, I can imagine you'd have a more complicated relationship to it -- some degree of nostalgia mixed with the glee of talking shit about it. As a complete outsider, I just get queasy imagining this stuff being foisted upon children. There's nothing cathartic to me about hearing it mocked in the way I think there is for others.

murt pie

Mostly reasons 2 through 4.

Kevin McCandless

I love the episodes on musicals. As far as I can tell, you're the only left podcast that takes them seriously without the kneejerk Biederman-esque dismissal. Please do more! edit: On a Q&A show a while back, you said you'd be doing an episode on Fosse/Verdon. (In response to my question, in fact!) Any idea when you might do that? I'd be so curious to hear your responses to it.

murt pie

The real answer is that we're all parasocial and can't handle not listening to our best friends (who would totally love us if we ever met in person) for more than a week.

Tom and Joe made me give them money to play their game and now I, Teagan, am anime sickos canon. I'm gonna live forever!

it’s sickening how disgusting and vile us WESheads are. We are just dirty dirty odyssey loving filth. Give us more Whit, show us John Avery’s perfectly waxed holes. Applesauce bible morals deep into our WOD FAM hi this is CHRISt

Antho

Where's the poll option of getting y'all to read para-socially affirming or obscene things during ladscast?

im so daddy i havent slept in a year

Honestly, I just like the show enough that I want the bonus episodes. Love the theater kid vibe, love the jokes and bits, love the horrifying glimpses into Evangelical culture. Keep it up!

vercingix

Mostly Whit's Endless Summer, but there have been other episodes (like Alien) that I wanted to listen to in full.

MuppetImp

As a good true protestant I am motivated by Goku working in my heart, not out of selfish motivation for bobus content. panglossing is its own reward

Elah

Is the game review gonna be for Catechumen? 2000's Blockbuster hit Jesus'emup?

Dergon

Each time I reload I'm allowed on more option so it's like a fun game.

Dergon

App, it now let me select 1 additional response lol. Tbf, the patreon app is often balls.

Dergon

The general thrust of the show (media of a dying empire) is fascinating, but I grew up defacto atheist so the stuff following Odyssey isn't nearly as interesting to me as the reviews of movies and games; all of it is of course very worth paying for though, you guys do a great job breaking things down.

Clark Schaefer

are you in the app or on the website? it should be a series of checkboxes

The Worst of all Possible Worlds

I might just be stupid, but the poll says choose all that apply yet I can only select one?

Dergon
