I have never seen this movie or looked it up before listening to this podcast. So when I was in the middle of listening to this podcast, I looked at another YouTube video of someone reacting to this movie. They reacted to the end and I did not know the twist. I thought it was going to end like a normal Jesus movie. my mind was blown… anyway, this is a fascinating take on this story, and a fascinating discussion. As a Catholic, I find this weird, but not necessarily offensive, mostly just really interesting. after all, it’s just a movie. The other video that I watched, the people reacting were Franciscan priests. Obviously, they were bothered by the heretical parts, but they did point out that this movie makes the point that without Christ death, none of Christianity matters. Thanks for making me think a lot today . Also, I find it interesting that Martin Scorsese made this movie and is still a Catholic? I’ll have to look it up. If so, I hope he finds out what Jesus thinks of this movie someday.

Also, along the lines of the Judas discussion, wherein his betrayal was a necessary role and thus not sinful, there's a fascinating story by Jorge Luis Borges called Three Versions of Judas about a heresy which posits that Judas, not Jesus, made the true sacrifice by committing the most loathsome act possible, and thus Judas was a sort of second messiah. Below is a version of the story which is formatted a bit weird, but has the distinct advantage of being free to read. https://southerncrossreview.org/49/borges-judas-eng.htm

It's only a bit of speculation, based on a thing or two I've observed, but I wonder if the real offense here wasn't along a similar line to Paul's appearance during the temptation. Whether the really fundamentalist, conservative ones are really only interested in a dead god who can't speak for themself. I don't care to stake out a broad position on theology or divinity at the moment, but even just conceptualizing Jesus as a person who lived in the world and had opinions on things, whether divine or not, seems threatening to the people who would claim themselves as the sole interpreter, and use that claimed relationship to enforce their own beliefs upon the world.

This reminded me of the parts of Christianity that really resonate and spoke to me. These more honest and human depictions of Jesus make me miss having faith and belief in that kind of cosmic empathy. After getting outside the church and seeing the breadth of human religion I'm not sure I could ever go back to even a progressive form of Christianity. My beliefs are better aligned with my values than when I sincerely held religion but there remains some sense of loss.

"She asked him to put his hands on her body and he said no way." Jesus is Leon Kennedy confirmed.

As someone who lost their religion in part because of the "movement" (or whatever you wanna call it) around his growing infamy, a Rob Bell episode would be pretty cool.

Good movie, fun talk, one of the best novels of the century
