2023-01-12 03:01:03 +0000 UTCA few of us (me) first heard about the Safdies and this film because of that score & the score for Good Time being composed by avant-garde synth hero Oneohtrix Point Never - in fact he met The Weeknd on the set of this film and now he has production credits on a couple chart hits and The Weeknd exec-produced and featured on his latest album of musique concrete absurdism. Speaking of the score, the clear musical homage to Akira throughout but especially in the climax really leaped out at me - after hearing y'all talk about the structure of this film I'm fairly convinced the Safdies were consciously referencing Akira, especially mimicking the literally explosive finale where the supporting cast becomes captive to a deutragonist surrendering to his own volatility. I'd love to view it a second time with the homage in mind but this slots in next to Arronofsky's mother! in the category of "10/10 I never want to see this again"
