Also!! Pretty harrowing in hindsight to think about a guy who did bad things and feels guilty, so he goes to his hometown to ask forgiveness from everyone he wronged before leaving? That guy is definitely planning on killing himself 😭 Meticulously unplugging himself from his past and ensuring he has no lingering unfinished business? Come on fotf you can’t be that blind to the implications

Me again, adding onto the conversation about the social fabric of civility and politeness. As a kid, the ONLY thing I remembered about Tom Riley’s character was that he didn’t forgive Richard. It didn’t matter that he was a farmer, that he had the whole Timothy Center and his wife’s health issues and all the other things that made him a person. The only thing that I remembered was him being cold and angry.

On my seventh relisten of this episode because I have brainrot and I usually black out completely into a rabid creature whenever Richard Maxwell is mentioned but I appreciate starting the Richard Maxwell episode with a monologue about sucking penis. It’s what he would’ve wanted.

God but it is so nice sometimes to not have to forgive someone. It’s healing to not forgive and not be doomed to wallow in guilt because of it

I think it’s pretty par for the evangelical course for the property damage to a grown man to be taken more seriously by the town than emotional trauma to a young girl, and it was (unfortunately) very realistic that Lucy’s parents had to *convince her* to accept Richard’s apology. It’s not fair and I hate this episode because they even gave her (again, a child who had been groomed) a big “I got off the plane” moment where she chases him down. It made me feel sick; the writers somehow managed to frame Lucy and Richard’s dynamic in a romantic light with that scene. Richard is my all-time favorite recurring character and I wish they could’ve done better but it’s just. So gross. how they portray girls and women as reactions to a man’s decisions rather than actual people.
