A look into my mind

Some thoughts for both videos

I loved this character. They were just a neat design. Here is the REFERENCE

So, for the request, this is what I received from my client,

“Jessica enjoys fighting and is good at it, as well as stargazing and space-related things, but generally has a friendly personality. Her main special attack is like "swift". *note that I am an SFW-only commissioner, but it's okay to ask if things are ok for it.* For the commission idea, I want her to look like she is fighting something and using her attack. You have liberties for the expression, pose, etc. In other words, go ham with it. c:”

So this was an exciting challenge, as I wanted to play on their fighter spirit and sense of “spitfire” personality but kept it SFW per my client’s request. So, for the sketch, I conceptualized an idea for the pose that might be a form of “challenge.”

-------------------

- For this character, I desired to play with more dynamic lighting. So, I went with a frame type of lighting that would draw you to their eyes and let it read over the image from left to right. But I feel that leading the gaze like this allowed for the full power of the pose to be felt.

- So, funny thing to note, I will pose myself at times for muscle memory reference in similar poses to “feel them out.” It allows me to better concept things in the space provided. Sometimes I will take pictures for reference if it is a more difficult pose.

-All in all I experimented with a brush that I am in love with for hair, this was from a brush pack I recently purchased here - BRUSH LINK

--------------------

- So, a new thing I’ve been practicing is not only saving me time in art but also, in general, I’m spending less time guessing and stressing over “details.” After all, the “devil” is in the details, and while I love details, there is a point of diminishing returns where you can overwork a piece too much, making it jarring to look at, or losing the point of the image because it’s just details.
- What is the trick? A form of Impressionism.

What is Impressionism? Impressionism is a theory or practice in painting, especially among French painters of about 1870, of depicting the natural appearances of objects by means of dabs or strokes of primary unmixed colors to simulate actual reflected light.

What does this mean for my work? I give impressions of details without going in and doing every little thing, which is the Time Void.

-One of the major areas this is seen is actually the hair in this piece where rather than paint in every single strand and every single highlight, I used a brush to make the impression of such. In this case, the highlights are made with a bristle brush in the pack I mentioned, where I used a single stroke to make these highlights.

If you have any comments, questions, or curiosities please feel free to ask me, I'm happy to explain my process
