Here are some notes regarding my thoughts on this process. I found to be particularly effective on this more complex character,
- This one was a bit more complex, though not at all in a wrong way. Given the details of the original reference, I had to sketch roughly a couple of times more than average to get the rough ideas down for their design, in this case, the blue lines seen in the beginning. This process was necessary to explore different design possibilities and refine the character's features. Once the base was down, I started to define this character's more plated scales and pronounced features.
- This, while it had the impression of line art, is still rough as I am not taking my time to define it entirely cleanly; I'm keeping it relatively loose and fluid. This is not to say that line art is rigid per se by comparison. Still, my line art takes a lot more time as I do a lot more definition to mitigate guesswork and time wasting for my more extensive illustration process.
- For what appears to be gemstone-like horns, the sort of glimmering effect I made was using a Grit brush in a packet that has these settings applied - BRUSH SETTINGS
As I cleaned up the character with shading and some highlighting, I wanted to ensure I incorporated that they are black dragons, so I darkened them slightly with a Hugh Saturation and a Curves adjustment layer.
