i like the movie more than you do, and on a second viewing the emotional elements were able to connect more because i wasn’t so jarred by how much of a comedy it is. normally, i think cape films drag a bit, but with this one i feel like there’s a 2h20m version with more emotion that would make it a really special movie. with rumors of marvel making Taika keep it under 2hrs i think he was forced to trim it down to the bones, taking out dramatic character scenes in order to keep necessary expositional scenes that he laced with comedy to help the medicine go down. as a result, 85% of the movie is light jokes and plot, so if you don’t like the jokes you’re just left with a soulless plot that was never meant to be the focus of the movie. Taika isn’t nolan. the plot is never the focus for him. so when he doesn’t have time to make you feel for his characters like only taika can it’s no wonder it’s falling flat for so many people.
