Listening Party: PLAVE 'ASTERUM 134-1' EP

Comments

I LOVE Asterum: 134-1! I enjoy listening to each song but not really into listening to Pllistmas, a christmas song, everytime I play the album so I skip it lol (which makes the album not unskippable) but this is really a great album and was my fave from plave before Caligo Pt.1!

i go back and forth on if this is my favorite ep of theirs or their caligo pt.1 ep i cant wait until you react to that one because all the songs on there are so fun to listen to you can tell that they have fun making their music

So happy you reacted to this. I knew you'd like this. I agree with everything you said. I've always been a huge YG Stan, loved all their groups and the diversity of talent on the roster but I'd sort of checked out of kpop because of the clear formula that was popping up from BLACKPINK onwards (and not just in YG but across the industry). I randomly saw PLAVE one day after they had their first win and listened to Way 4 Luv mostly in jest, but then got hooked on the nostalgia it gave me then went down a rabbit hole of realising this is authentic artistry, it's the OG kpop vibe but not dated and without the industry machine (ironically enough). Love everything about PLAVE

PD you would love AHOFS cover of Way 4 Luv that they did. You GOTTA check it out

yeah i think what makes plave stand out musically is you can tell theyre HUNGRY for this. not just wanting to be on a stage, but to really make music. i think about how hamin basically learned how to sing from the members (particularly yejun) and his massive improvement really shows how much the members love art and music. its just a level of sincerity and authenticity we havent gotten in such a long time.

pd what are the chances of you watching one of their concerts? hehehe....

Ah Asterum: 134-1 my beloved. Truly every song on this album just hits so well. And honestly i do hope you get to see a concert of them either as a livestream or in person because it’s so worth it. Especially Our Movie live is soooo good when everyone sings along during the concert marking the end of the concert but not the end of the journey. I also agree on WAY 4 LUV being super cheesy but still being such a good song. AHHHH i can’t wait to see how you will fare with Caligo Pt.1 coming up! Which is so good bc PLAVE will comeback on April 7 with Caligo Pt. 2 (which also means you should check out the Dash MV before the new comeback since it will probably be a continuation of that storyline)

I didn't really like Noah's airy tone when this EP came out. I felt like he was overdoing it in Watch me woo. (and he is my bias lol) but after watching that song live I was worshipping his airy tone ever since lol

I think if you watch the MV for Way 4 Luv (or any of their MVs that have to do with their lore) you'll understand a bit more why they lean into the corniness (like, literally all the time lol). But I do get why it doesn't fully resonate for you in the way you described and that's okay (and also that you still love it regardless!). Watch Me Woo is a fan fave so they've performed it quite a few times now but it was also in the Killing Voice so you probably heard it there. Lyric-wise, Virtual Idol is probably their most meta song (which is saying something because they have few of those lol) and they did a great (and very knowing) performance of it at Show! Music Core in Japan a couple years ago. From is a song the members have described as a letter to themselves, so it's very emotional and personal to them specifically, and that never fails to come across. I'm glad it moved you too. I can confirm Our Movie is absolutely *that* song in concert, I would love for you to check it out live someday! And Merry PLLIstmas had its genesis in a Christmas-style tune Noah came up with years ago, pre-PLAVE. (You spoke about their rappers being able to sing - the member doing the high note towards the end of Merry PLLIstmas is Hamin, one of their main rappers!) I'm really, really glad you enjoyed this mini album so much! It was my fave mini-album too until Caligo Pt 1, although I'd still argue this one feels the most quintessentially PLAVE, in that I feel like on ASTERUM 134-1 it was the first time they were able to capture everything PLAVE actually stands for, maybe because the process of becoming and then being PLAVE over that past year had confirmed it to the members, and they poured all of that into the record. So when you speak about feeling as though they're pulling you into their virtual world as opposed to just presenting songs, that kind of confirms it for me too. There's an Oscar Wilde quote that goes "Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth". It kind of makes me sound like a loon saying it out loud but for me, PLAVE is the embodiment of that quote.
