Love and grief are two major themes that I feel they do such an amazing job with. Oftentimes, they go hand in hand and the effect it has on those around you and even yourself are more profound than people imagine. Something I really love about Frieren is that they explore many forms of love. Himmel loved Frieren, and with love, he knew he could never push that onto her. But that never diminished his love for her. Up until the end, he was always waiting for her, with open arms. And whether or not Frieren loved him back in the same way, she DID love him, she wouldn’t have started this journey again if she didn’t. He changed her, he became someone important to her, and she will carry his memory into the rest of her life. This journey is all to try to understand herself, and more importantly, the people around her.

2026-02-14 20:13:13 +0000 UTCOne of my absolute favourite frieren episodes 💖 I really do think a lot of this series is frieren coming to understand what love (in all forms) really is, and I think the tragedy of that, like you said, is that Himmel has feelings for her but believed it best to not say anything, and now frieren is searching to understand what was never said. One of my favourite shots here (i think for many people this is the case too) was when Himmel knelt down to put the ring on her with the clock tower between them, showing that the only thing between them really was time. Love this reaction pd! 💖
