The Kulture Study: LISA 'BORN AGAIN' (ft. Doja Cat & RAYE) MV

Comments

I worked across Raye's music a lot last year, and to see her continue to flourish as an independent artist is so beautiful. This collaboration is such a testament to Lisa's character as she could have easily taken the song for herself but decided to feature the original composer and Doja Cat, making this collaboration feel even more meaningful!

Have you checked out Moonlit Floor? That was another pre-release before this one

WiseSmellyLegs

you need to tap in, she rlly is Nicki's daughter and took female rap to a whole new level

danito

doja cat literally KILLED her verse singing and rapping ugh mother

i love that lisa goes for collabs with artists who, much like herself, are aces at what they do: all three of them are singers AND rappers, and they get to show it all off in a single song, together. (agreed, btw, new woman is my anthem but this song has been on repeat ever since it came out).

PD, she’s sensational! I saw her live just by chance and was obsessed. I genuinely I think you will love her stuff! Doja’s artistry is very broad and she plays into different genres of music. She is also heavily involved in her videos and they are a different quality ! Recommendations: Kiss me More, demons, Paint the town Red(for video)…. Or check out the scarlet album

Yyyyyeeesss. I knew you were gonna love this one. YG had weights on the Blackpink girls cus since they've been freed they have been EATING this pop shit UP (excuse my French). I think one of the reasons it feels so religious is because it was Raye's song first. Raye is Christian and talks about/references her faith quite consistently in her music. Her faith is very important to her but that doesn't mean that she doesn't question it as well. I think the tree and apples are meant to question the idea that Eve was condemned for biting the apple and blamed for humans "falling" from grace. Lisa said this MV is to honor powerful/scorned women throughout history so I think they are honoring Eve in their way with the tree being upside down. It's a pushback on the way society is always so quick to judge women's choices harshly. This song was a song Raye had originally written for her debut album but her label at the time, Polydor, wouldn't let her release her album. Raye was with Polydor for almost a decade and they never let her release the album she wanted. They kept her in the basement writing songs for other artists such as Beyonce, John Legend, Aespa, Charli XCX, and more. Raye has a distinct sound and this song is right up her alley. She takes big inspiration from funk, jazz, blues, r&b, and pop. Raye finally got released from her label and was able to release her album called, "My 21st Century Blues" in 2023. Her song, "Escapism" which was released before the album as a single, blew up on TikTok which fast-tracked her into stardom overnight. I've been with Raye for years so it has been a whirlwind seeing her go from an obscure artist to everyone asking for her name overnight. I couldn't be happier for her, she deserves it so much. She truly just does music for the LOVE of music. Raye's debut album was written by her (she also helps compose/produce as well) and talks a lot about her journey over the years so if you listen to it you'll understand why her blowing up now has been so long-awaited and so well deserved. I highly recommend checking out her live orchestra performance of her song "Oscar Winning Tears" at the Royal Albert Hall. I also recommend her song Genesis. Her debut album won her 6 awards at the BRIT awards last year. The BRIT Awards are like the Grammy's of the UK. She was nominated for 7 awards and took home 6 including Album of The Year, which is the most BRIT awards anyone's ever won in one night. She did a medley performance at the BRIT awards that is the last thing I'll recommend for now. Sorry for the long reply. I just love Raye so much and it has made my life to see her in this collab with Lisa and Doja Cat. I am so happy and grateful that Lisa was able to buy this from Raye's old label, bring her back on it, AND make sure she gets the writing and producing credits on it too!!! Lisa is truly a girls girl. You have to love it. I think this is already collab of the year for me.

Why?? I ask because I am largely unfamiliar with her work. I only know Agoura Hills? And I love that one

Side note, I wasn't familiar with Raye either before this. Done my deep dive - highly suggest you check her out. Her whole background in the music industry is interesting, especially with this song as she's the one that wrote it awhile ago but her label wouldn't let her release it. Lisa apparently bought the song and asked to collab with her on it. Raye has fantastic songs, a fantastic talent and an amazing performer! Please check her out if you can!

I think you're on the right track with MV. A lot of people have been making connections to their scenes/outfits to women in history, in particular women who were scorned at one point or had tragic ends. Lisa has mentioned this is MV is a tribute to powerful women throughout history. Here's a few examples people have come up with, some I'm more familiar with and some others have contributed online. Lisa's opening shot/outfit - this one is a little mixed on me as I can't really pinpoint. Some people think it's a reference to Marie Antoinette, I was getting more Eva Perón. Both women I think could fit, although I think Eva is a stronger contender as she was criticized for her activism, but she fought for women's rights in Argentina. All 3 women in the fancy room - this one I couldn't make the reference, but a few people have put out that it might be the Crow Woman, a figure in Indigenous folklore. I am very unfamiliar with that lore, so if anyone has anymore info on that or another guess, please sound off. There was also some guesses they were possible nymphs or faes in mythology. Again unsure. Lisa's gymnast outfit - a lot of people are making connections that it might be Tonya Harding, with the outfit and the quick shot of skates during Raye's part of the chorus before Lisa's. I'm on the fence on that one, as she is controversial on the attack of her rival. Doja - this one I believe is a reference to the Salem Witch Trials. A lot of women were prosecuted during that, all probably innocent because they were burned at the stake for not admitting to them being accused of being witches. Especially when Doja was tied up and had the circle of fire around her. Lisa and her apples - obviously, this is a reference to Eve from the Bible, where she was scorned for eating the apple and gaining knowledge. Raye in the water and flowers - I want to say this is a reference to the Ophelia painting, based on the tragic character in Hamlet where, after losing her father and being rejected by her love, she tragically dies by accidentally falling into a brook after collecting flowers. All 3 women in armor - I think, especially with Doja's outfit, it's a reference to Joan of Arc. Where, despite being a capable warrior, she was persecuted because they thought she was a witch. I think with the theme of Born Again, of being a New Woman, they wanted to show examples of women in history who deserved better treatment/outcomes.

I’m not the most familiar with Raye since I’ve just been getting into her lately, but she released her debut studio album in 2023 after leaving her old record label! It sounds like they really used her to write hits for other people (for like 7 years???) and wouldn’t allow her to release her own music. I highly recommend checking out her Royal Albert Hall performance and her Brit Awards performance on your own time if you want!!

As soon as I heard that Raye wrote Born Again, I was surprised I didn’t immediately clock it based on the style/sound of the song!

Did she better thing

Raye wrote this song back in 2020/2021 but her old label never let her release it, so she sold it to Lisa! We Raye fans are sooo glad this song is finally seeing the light of day lol (fun fact Raye also wrote Better Things by aespa and there's even a remix version with her)

This is probably my favorite Lisa solo release! A very different style for her but I dig the Dua Lipa-esque sound. Another thing I really loved was how long the song was, allowing all three artists time to equally shine, a TRUE collab.
