Why Multiclassing Should Be Banned In 5e

Comments

At my table people only get to multi class if they can make it make sense. I also do the same thing with people switching classes if they're unhappy, but it has to be during extended downtime. (We got the mutliclassing rules wrong on how the spell slots work and it did get really crazy so we looked back over the rules and we realized our error lol)

From a design perspective I think a way to force a balance might be to add an ability score minimum to the requirements. Either to new classes you design or the subclasses specifically. Or require one over the other. Like forcing fighters to need a 13 in both strength and dex isnt too hard to do given that monks need a 13 in dex and wisdom. But forcing an additional requirement like 13 constitution or 15 in strength so it isnt as readily grabable. Maybe make some that even raised the minimum. If you are a sorcerer and you are picking this subclass you will need a 20 in charisma to switch out out levels for another class. Or simply raising the minimum requirements from 13 to 15 or even 17 for particularly busted ones that are best left to their own class
