Question From @Thorn on Discord:
When do you feel fudging dice is most appropriate? I know this has been discussed in a few videos. It's a fine line to walk; however, in specific scenarios, it's necessary.
Response from Monty Martin:
It's fine to fudge it if you're rolling on a random table to get ideas and are unhappy with the result (i.e., you rolled a random encounter or treasure or something). Go ahead and roll again, or pick something more interesting. Otherwise, if you're rolling the dice, and there's a possible outcome you don't want to happen, you don't have to make that a likely outcome. So I think the best "fudging" should happen here when you decide what's possible. If a player jumps over a chasm, a natural one doesn't mean they fall to their death and die. A natural one could mean they tripped on the approach and landed prone, hanging off the edge of the side they started on. This isn't always possible since the game rules generally dictate the possibilities for most attacks and saving throws and probably the most contentious on the "fudge or not." I think fudging these is understandable if it's going to prevent the campaign from breaking/going off the rails, and should otherwise be done very rarely, if at all.
