From Discord, “Ryu” asked:
How would you scale up the combat if six players were in a Drakkenheim campaign?
Monty Martin:
So, the encounters in Drakkenheim are only loosely balanced. Since it’s a sandbox-style campaign, the PCs can end up way over their heads or trounce some fights. It’s up to them to play smart. Most encounter locations are dynamic, where encounters can blend or aggro the dungeon if the players aren’t careful. In general, if you have a party of 6, increasing the number of monsters in each location by 25-50% is a very rough guideline. If precise encounter balance is vital to you, I suggest you use the 2024 encounter building rules to rebuild most encounters to your desired taste/ difficulty.
But again, Drakkenheim is written to be an adventure where the locations are live. The ratlings run and get help—the harpies in the clocktower swoop down from above. The garmyr presents massive hunting packs. The faction strike teams are based on the available roster of the factions, not what makes a “fair fight.”
