Eldritch Experiment: Wraith Blade Sorcerer!

Greetings Patrons!

This week we're presenting our February Eldritch Experiment: the Wraith Blade Sorcerer subclass! You can download the attached PDF at the end of this post.

The Wraith Blade Sorcerer has been possessed by the spirit of a warrior, imbuing them with otherworldly magic and martial abilities. The spirit fuses itself to the inherently magical soul of the sorcerer, allowing their undead influence and martial prowess to flow into the magic inhabiting the sorcerer, giving them natural talents with a blade, and the ability to channel spectral energy into their weapons.

The Wraith Blade Sorcerer is our attempt to create a melee-focused sorcerer in a similar fashion to concepts like the Bladesinger Wizard, or the Valour Bard. When we first pondered this concept for sorcerers, we knew we wanted to have them play using Meta-magic along with their melee attacks. We also wanted to drive home the themes of an undead spirit bound to the soul of the sorcerer.

I have been wishing for a sorcerer gish forever and this fulfills that niche perfectly. I do like the meta blade feature. It seems a bit much at first, but I believe the value isn't crazy. Some even seem a bit underpowered. I do agree with the sentiment that they should get CHA based attacks, especially with the revised blade singer from UA having it and the decreased weapon proficiency. I believe that Ghost Form is a bit under tuned for a 14th level feature, but that's not a big issue. Ghostly Possession also seems weird. For an 18th level feature all I get are possibly better STR Con and Dex scores for an hour. On top of that its limited to only humanoids. Features like this are hard to translate well into D&D without some exploits if the feature gives a lot of leeway, but by the time 18th level rolls around, I wouldn't mind the ability to cause some shenanigans.

This really reminds me of the Ghostwalker book from the Forgotten Realms novels. Love the theme. Edit: After reading, I think you should keep Meta Blade, but I agree that it feels like a 6th level feature. I also think it needs the ability to attack with charisma. It doesn't give extra armor proficiencies, so you're locked into a Dex build for your weapons. Giving all martial weapon proficiencies feels a bit wasted when you can't use any strength based weapons without devastating your build. It feels like you're pigeonholed into multiclassing into Warlock or Fighter to compensate. I want to take this subclass all the way, but it feels like I'm mechanically blocked from doing so. I think giving it the ability to attack with Cha would help compensate a lot for those things. It's pretty freely available for Warlock in both 2014 & 2024 editions, so it doesn't feel like it's less powerful to me. Light and medium armor proficiencies would be nice too, or maybe Unarmored AC. You could make it part of Warrior Spirit or it's own thing. It'd help add to level 3 so Meta Blade could be moved to 6th level without leaving a gap in level 3.
