Halsey always ran the limit of his logistics. When you look at his carrier raids on the Marshalls, Wake and Marcus, he is literally running out of fuel on his return.

I thought that the many command decisions made during this period, by many, different command figures -- huge risks, with a lot of cascading casualty disasters and harsh, sacrificial choices for some -- would have shaken-down and tightened-up the planning checklists for these guys... following this string of logistics knife-fights and plain bad choices. Then, massing off of Okinawa, Halsey's fleet is strung out with critical fuel states and desperate attempts to un-rep in storm conditions. I cannot imagine what it was like for those brave, young guys to stand their watches in those violently pitching destroyers -- knowing you're about to be left without power. RIP to each of them lost.

Fantastic, Sal! Priceless synopsis, in less than 90 minutes -- and a credible history platform for those hundreds of anecdotes and reality details. Those crippling gaps in planning "reassurances" / 'thou-shalt-deliver' blinders, vs. harsh reality, were only off-set by the innovative, work-the-problem(!) strength of those thousands of sailors and troops out there on the ragged edge of that whole, desperate mess.

This was terrific! On the edge of my seat- reminded me of reading Morrison’s work!

Warning...it is a long one.
