Brody replied with a nod. He walked to the corner of the room and gathered the backpack, water bottles, and a few sandwiches. He lifted his lacrosse stick and swung it over his shoulder like a rifle.
“What are you going to do with that? Play lacrosse against the crazies?” Madison said with a smirk.
“While you were sleeping last night, I wove some metal wires through the stick and tied the netting together. Oh, and I added this sweet strap to put it over my back.”
Madison rolled her eyes. “Whatever. We need to get a gun.”
“Guns make too much noise.”
When he was finished packing a few articles of clothes for each of them, along with the other items in the backpack, he walked to the trapdoor leading out of the attic. “Ready?”
She swallowed hard and crouched by his side. “I guess.”
He lifted the door, poised to swing with his lacrosse stick. When the door swung open, the twins gazed through the whole and saw the hardwood floor. Brody dropped to his knees and stuck his head out.
“Nothing. They’re not there. I guess they wandered away,” he said and lifted his head.
As he started to lower the ladder, Madison grabbed his arm. “There still may be crazies inside. We have to be careful.”
Brody nodded and lowered the ladder. He climbed down a few rungs and paused to look around. He listened but only heard dripping water a short distance away. He climbed down the rest of the way and waited as Madison started after him.
Once she stood beside him, Brody walked to the staircase and paused. Again, he listened but heard no sounds from below. With careful steps, he descended halfway and spotted a figure standing in the open door of his mother’s bedroom. He raised his hand from Madison to stop and pointed at the figure. She wore white-and-blue harem pants with a navy blue bikini top. Her skin was yellow with those tiny green marks he noticed on the crazies. A low growl was stuck in her throat.
Madison came close to her brother and whispered in his ear. “What do we do?”
