Zombie Exodus: Aftermath, scene 36
Added 2022-11-29 13:01:00 +0000 UTC"Over there! Steven is moving. We need to drive there and see if he and his wife are alive," you shout.
Megan shakes her head as she spins the wheel and heads towards the pair lying across the road. Even from a distance of fifty feet, you can see the char and ash on their bodies and clothes from the grenade blast. Steven rolls to his side and drapes an arm over his wife, though you are still too far away to see his condition.
Once again, from the forest, howls slither through the trees like they are searching for an answer. All of the gunfire and roars of engine motors have called them out. They're not far away. Judging the distance, you expect them in less than a minute.
"I know Steven is a good guy, but there are lots of zombies coming," Jesse says. She removes her hat to fix her hair when the Jeep hits a bump. The right side lifts and drops to the road creating a high bounce. Her hat falls out of her hand and flops in a puddle at the forest's edge.
"Stop the Jeep!" she shouts. "I lost my hat."
"Your hat?" Megan yells back. "We're trying to save someone. I'm not stopping for a damn hat."
The Jeep speeds to within ten feet of Steven and Serena before coming to a stop and sliding into the dirt. Steven raises his hand to wave you over. Tears streak through the dirt on his face. You, Portland, and Jesse run by his side. He has a shard of blackness, likely metal, stuck in his right thigh. Burns coat the right side of his face and the exposed parts of his right arm and hand. Serena looks much worse. She's missing one eye, and a large hole sits in her stomach. She doesn't move and has the waxy face of death.
"Grab him and go," Megan shouts as she stands in her seat to scan the woods. "Infected are coming. If I had to guess, hybrids."
You and Portland move to his torso to help lift him while Jesse reaches for his legs.
"Stop," Steven says in a whispering shout, his voice coarse and raspy. "I'm not leaving her."
"We don't have time for this," Jesse says. "I'm sorry, Steven. She's…"
"I know she's dead," he says, hanging his head. "We have to take her back with us. She needs to be buried."
One of the infected pokes out from the tree line, his elongated legs carrying him across the short field. His skin is brown and ragged, a sign of deep infection from long ago. A burst of gunfire comes from the Jeep, striking him high on the torso. It barely slows his approach, but the next burst hits him in the head and drops into the dirt.
"Get him in this Jeep, now!" Megan shouts as she keeps the M-16 pointed at the woods.
