Both women stare at you wide-eyed with fear. Serena checks her pistol once more while Portland stretches her legs and takes a series of deep breaths. You leave them and move low on the hill leading up to the plateau. The guard in the tower has no way to see you unless you move past the summit, so you circle to the farthest side until the terrain grows rocky. From here, you can’t see Serena or Portland and have no way to signal them. You have to hope they act when the time comes.
You creep forward until you breach the plateau. Though you can barely see the watchtower, you spot the guard and wait for him to turn his back to you. With a sudden leap forward, you burst across the field towards the closest tent. Your feet pound on the hard-packed dirt, and you keep watch on the tower, the prisoner cage, and the few soldiers keeping an eye on the camp. As far as you can tell, no one sees your approach.
When you reach the tent, you flatten your body against it and circle away from the watchtower. You see and hear no movement inside the tent, so you search for the opening and slip inside. The stench of body odor hits your nose, and you see bundles of clothing lying on the ground. This must be a laundry tent where they collect uniforms before bringing them to the nearby river for washing.
“Felder, look sharp!” A growth voice shouts across the campground. “You look like a god damn fool, standing there with your shirt hanging out in your hat on crooked. Show some respect for this unit, or I will send your ass to the mines to shovel coal with the rest of the degenerates. You got that, maggot?”
“Yes, sir!”
You peek through another opening in the laundry tent and spot a young man standing just outside it, adjusting his uniform. Although he does not carry a rifle, he has a pistol on his hip. He can’t be taller than you and looks thin and bony, making you wonder if malnourishment drove him to join the West Pointers.
Not far from your tent sits the campfire, which looks unattended. A pile of coal rests next to it, along with pots, cooking utensils, and kindling. A large tent occupies the space nearby. Most likely a mess tent, it should be close enough to light up if the campfire got higher. On the far side of the tent is a weapons rack with two automatic rifles.
As you consider ways to make a diversion for Serena and Portland, you spot Jesse in the middle of camp with her hands tied overhead to the pole. She looks side to side, and you catch her swiveling her wrists and squeezing her hands against the ropes.
That’s it, Jesse. Get your hands free.
“McCade, radio over to Captain Desmond and tell him about the spies. I’m pretty sure they work for the Reds, but we’ll get to the bottom of it. Not the first time I’ve tortured a degenerate.”
You recognize the same voice as the one who yelled at Felder outside your tent. They’re going to start interrogating the prisoners, so you must act fast and make that diversion.
