Added 2022-03-08 00:24:32 +0000 UTCIn the recent release of Zombie Exodus: Safe Haven, Part 3, I wrote several dead ends where choices you make lead to death. This has led to some pushback, since it resets your character back to the beginning of Part 3. Some people have asked for checkpoints like I had in the original Zombie Exodus. Coding checkpoints is actually quite difficult. The number of variables in this game is huge, and adding checkpoints would be an incredible amount of work to test and edit every time a new variable is added to the game. Therefore, I've thought of a few other options for handling deaths in the game.
1. Take away player death. I personally think I have only created deaths in situations that should be obviously avoided or in situations in which players are not using their strengths. But I'm seeing some many posts about deaths, I'm thinking I could just remove them all.
2. Include a death scene to show the player made the wrong choice and then immediately spring them back to life. The death can be a glimpse of what could have happened. This would be extra coding, but would be fun for players. I could also give a choice at the beginning of the game on whether you want this type of mechanic or the more hard mode.
3. I could add checkpoints. This would dramatically increase development time and testing time. Therefore this would increase the time between releases.
Which option seems best to you?

My only complaint is that if you actually manage to die, you have to restart the whole part

2022-03-12 18:11:57 +0000 UTCI agree that death is needed. I died once, also on my second playthrough and it was because I was not really paying attention. Death should be a consequence. If necessary it can be altered but I prefer it being possible.

2022-03-08 13:35:49 +0000 UTCThough my MC hasn't died yet, death is a shadow and it adds tension to every encounter with any group (even my own), so it would be more realistic to restart from the beginning of Part 3. However, it does take so much time to get back to the place where you were, especially if you're the leader. There have been a couple of occasions when there has been a momentary lag as I'm scrolling down the page or some other reason, like not paying proper attention, and I've pressed the wrong thing, making a choice or response I didn't want and I've had to restart from the beginning - which is fine if I have a good chunk of time to myself, but I often read a little between shifts or before I go to sleep. I appreciate that it would take a hell of a long time to code to add save points at the beginning of each mission, but what about the beginning of a chapter? Or maybe just at the beginning of a chapter that involves multiple dangerous missions?

2022-03-08 07:49:13 +0000 UTCI chose the middle one.. checkpoints can be a nightmare as you have to do it all over again (from the checkpoint obviously) but having death scenes seem either like a nightmare where MC wakes up or like a seekng the future kinda thing would work better than taking death out the book.

2022-03-08 07:40:18 +0000 UTCI would choose checkpoint because chapter is like number nine is extremely annoying because let’s say since I am a leader. It gets an annoying when all of those tasks I did since it’s pretty long. I really do not want to have to do that all over again.

2022-03-08 02:57:14 +0000 UTCPassable is the best choice, In my opinion. I'm sorry it'll require extra work, but thankfully far less work than the third option needs to be implemented. Love your work, Keep it up, Jim! <3

2022-03-08 02:56:34 +0000 UTCI disagree that there needs to be a change. Personally only died once and it was a bit annoying to start over but it was deserved cause I wasn't playing attention. I was on my 2nd playthrough. Also its really easy to breeze through this these type of games when your trying to get to a specific point, so don't see the need for checkpoints.

2022-03-08 01:00:10 +0000 UTCHonestly I think their should be more chances to die. This is a zombie apocalypse death should be waiting around every corner, and it should inevitably have consequences
2022-03-08 00:48:30 +0000 UTCI disagree with the first option because it will take away the thrill of "survival". Me personally have no problem with current system and I'm TOTALLY AGAINST the option that will prolong the release of Part 4.
