Hello friends,
Currently sitting in a field at Guilfest waiting to soundcheck with The Velveteen Orkestra.
The weather is hot and little girls are doing handstands on the grass… it’s all a little bit wholesome for a goth like me 😅
Never worry, here I am to bring you a real heart-breaker.
Here is a song that Jonny and I wrote last year.
The subject matter is bittersweet. His father had passed away and he was in a place of grieving.
I had these chords and the chorus line, I handed it over to Jonny and when he came through it, and back into our writing sessions he had them finished.
We’ve always used songwriting to pull us through the hard times, to commemorate them, to feel them fully… and this one is called Other Side.
It’s about saying goodbye, and expressing the heavy weight of loss that a loved one leaves behind when they part from us.
Jonny always said his dad was his hero. I’m sure you’ll agree this song is a beautiful tribute to him.
I think the lyrics are some of the best I’ve ever heard and they are all Jonny’s ♥️
LYRICS:
Hey you quit grinning in the dark
It’s going to happen that the bite once pips the bark
Silent like a cellophane scream
Blinding like a laser beam
I loved being on your team
You always did talk big for your size
Scream at the dark until the dark learned to hide
And as sure as the morning will arrive
I’ll see you on the other side
What can I do but say goodbye
You were out there in the cold dark night
And I wept to feel your arms close around me
I smile to know you loved the sea and
To remember that you’ll be
Waiting at the tide
On the other side
On the other side
From Asphodel to carousel
Where stubborn souls like yours and mine will ride
To the other side
To the other side
Til then ma belle, I’m villanelle
You tell the black to reach for the sky
Bliss takes your wrist at the rolling horizon
Blow me a kiss and flip the finger to Poseidon
If you’re gonna do it, do it soon
Swing by my room, grab a balloon
I’ll race you to the moon.
From grace through to pity on love
And the blessed must keep walking
A lawyer in a madhouse, an English man rehearsing Faust
A glory-starved bigmouth I keep talking
On the other side
On the other side
Pour Muscatel in my inkwell
A sixpence for the boatman’s glassy eyes
On the other side
On the other side
Till then ma belle, I’m villanelle
So tell the black to reach for the sky
Back and forth paces the wolf’s thuggish heart
You put em together, I’ll pull them apart
You love is a bluejay gone haywire
And broken birds fall in the heather
I scratch these words with your feathers
On the other side
On the other side
From Sadler’s Wells to the edge of hell
Two tokens for the spectre’s park and ride
To the other side
To the other side
Till then ma belle, I’m villanelle
Tell the black to reach for the sky
