M𝔞𝖉ę ộḟ şṗ𝕷ï𝐍ṯeṙṩ...

Dear Flock,

This month is very exciting as we will be releasing the first official single from HEX.

It's been a long time coming. 

These songs were written during the early stage of the pandemic but they've been swimming around my head for some time before that too.

The new songs... what can I tell you about them?

They're a big step away from where we were. The music has very dream-like quality, but with an aggressive edge, complex drum patterns and you'll notice there is no violin and no piano. 

Vocally, I've been pushing myself to new places, incorporating metal growls, frys and whistle-tones. I've also been more restrained during many sections, letting the music breathe, and the wonderful band just do their thing. 

I feel like there is an equal balance and stability to the line-up that Ive never felt before. It is a chance to just make some very solid music and craft something timeless. We are taking our time to get it just right.

Musically, this is a big shift for us, but as you well know - Birdeatsbaby is not a band that likes to re-create the same ideas. Hana is playing cello/harp on this album, and has more singing roles than before, and I have decided to become a synth-bitch. Garry is playing an 8-string guitar and Anna is creating some very progressive drum patterns.

I'm writing from the piano and then converting these idea into electronic midi patterns in Logic. A day's work could look a bit like this:

During the pandemic I also felt incredibly introverted. These songs are more introspective than anything I've ever written before and the whole album is definitely a journey into the abyss. For those of you who know the work of Carl Yung then I would consider this the audio equivalent of shadow work.

This album is completely a group effort - for the first time I think every member has brought forward something truly unique of their own, and we've now got a new flavour in there that I'm hoping you'll like.

Production comes from mister Evan Rodaniche from Cage9 (he produced Hana Piranha's Waiting To Burn and HVIRESS) and music videos come from Scott Chalmers.
