New Terrain Patreon

Hello Fellow Trappers!

I hope you had a great weekend of printing, painting, and playing! Today we want to present to you an idea we have and get your input on it. Recently we've been considering creating a new sister patreon to dragon trappers lodge that would focus exclusively on terrain and specifically larger scale terrain for fdm printers. So let us tell you what exactly we are imagining and why we want to do it.

The new patreon would feature only terrain and the the current DTL patreon would focus on miniatures. The current set would include our normal offering of minis and would continue to offer the smaller resin compatible scatter terrain we've been creating. The new patreon would include the resin scatter terrain from the main release in one tier, larger fdm specific terrain in another tier, and a third tier for both types. The terrain patreon would match the theme for the month of our normal release so if you wanted to pick up both you could get basically a whole encounter.

So why the change? Well there are two main reasons. One, we noticed that many of you don't print the fdm terrain at all. Our subscriber base largely sticks to resin with less than half our base even owning fdm printers. This means that with this most recent release there is a handful of models that over half our patrons can't even print. If we split it up we could provide minis for the people who want minis and terrain for those who want terrain and people who want both could get both. This would allow us to focus the main patreon on creating more minis each month and the terrain one on growing it's selection as well without putting out models that many of you can't or won't print. The second reason is that for both creative and financial reasons we want to expand into larger scale fdm terrain pieces. Creatively we would be able to explore more grand terrain that would be difficult to get cut for resin but would be designed to work great for fdm. Lodges, larger environmental terrain pieces, etc. Financially it would also allow us to tap into a new market of fdm printers that currently we are barely scratching. That means more growth and more models all around.

What would this mean for you? Well if you are someone who doesn't print any of the fdm or larger scale terrain it means the current patreon would be focusing more on minis, but you would still get your resin scatter terrain. Essentially you would see more models you will actually print. For the handful of you current patrons who only want the terrain it would give you an opportunity to only get that instead of spending money on minis you don't print and you'd be able to get more terrain than the current offering. And finally the main reason we are asking is because for those of you who like both it would become more expensive. You would have to subscribe to two patreons instead of one which means parting with more of your hard earned money, however, with the way it would be set up you could subscribe to just the fdm tier on the terrain patreon so you aren't paying for scatter terrain twice. Additionally while you are paying more you would be getting more as well. Each respective patreon would be able to provide more than what is currently being offered with just one patreon.

Now that we've made our case we want to know what you think? Do you want more variety and a wider range range of models or do you want things to stay the same? Please vote below and let us know what you think.

I have to agree with Damon that adding additional Tiers to the existing Patreon would be a better option.

If there is a split which one would the current year subs be placed into

That would be the plan. We already have hired more sculptors. The first month of the split might feel a little light but the next month would hit full swing and we could start expanding it from there.

The Dragon Trappers Lodge

I think we may just do a new tier. Merchants would get access to all of it with their current subscription and you could adjust your annual sub and just pay the difference.

The Dragon Trappers Lodge

We’ll I guess we’ll have to prove you wrong.

The Dragon Trappers Lodge

We’ve hired more artists so there’s no need to worry about quality going down.

We may just do that

I also, am running both types of printers. I like the minis and scatter terrain pieces, but I would love some larger terrain pieces! I also agree that it seems unneccessary, and would probably be easier for those patrons who would chose to opt in, to manage everything through one patreon with added tiers, than to carry a second patreon just for the additional terrain. At least I know it would be easier for me, as I am not very tech savvy when it comes to keeping up with all of these things. Also again, depending on your price point for the different tiers. Just my thoughts, as someone on a fixed income.

Would you hire on extra help for the two patreons? I think if you spli the load it would be fair to say you're giving both the same level of attention, thus not diminishing the value of either patreon.

Agreed that with an existing annual sub, purchasing another for just terrain seems unnecessary. Honestly, if someone wants terrain, there are tons of other patrons out there for just terrain. people come to dragon trappers for amazing concepts and big huge monsters

This seems like it gets pretty tangled pretty quick between the yearly subs and the merchant tiers…

This. And with that wall of text of yours i can easily see quite a few people just flying over the text and thinking you are just going to split the current releases or sth. like that.

Just wanted to +1 this, having everything on one patreon is my ideal solution as well. Having it all on one patreon makes it easier to find what I'm looking for when I'm hunting for something like lore from previous releases.

I'd say my biggest concern is you guys just switched to putting out these large numbers of models in October and attempting to keep the same quality and quantity of models while attempting to add a whole additional Patreon seems daunting. To be blunt, I don't at this point trust you to be able to put out the same level to this patreon while basically attempting to double output. Maybe with at least half a year of consistent big releases I would have some more faith in this big of an expansion. Overall, I'm probably more in favor of just adding a few tiers to cover this within the same community.

Well as long as the small scatter terrain stays in the current Patreon with the minis I am totally okey with the fact that there is others Patreons. Currently I have printed almost all the small scatter terrains available in monthly roasters. If anything I wish there were even more small scatter terrain in the current Patreon (but not at the cost of less beautiful minis 🤷🏻‍♂️) And by the way I also don’t have a FDM printer and will not be interested in the new Patreons. I personally prefer building the big terrain pieces like houses with XPS foam “the old way”. Keep up the good work 😉

More Trapper's Lodge stuff? Sounds great! More fee? I mean yeah, that's fair, even though realistically I can't afford more... so I'd probably dip in and out of it. I'd say that having an extra tier here would probably be better, keeps everything in 1 place... and also if the poll vote here for that month's theme chooses what the terrain is too, then makes more sense for it to all be here too (else the terrain only people might feel like they have no say). Then again... as an annual earlybird patron myself, that may screw that up a bit (so keeping things separate may be better in that regard) :\ That said... I would like to say that you've been stretching releases big time lately... lots of seriously cool stuff, and I mean LOTS. My main worry there, is that in stretching quantity, you risk quality, and/or making your fabulous artists super overworked... so only add more terrain on top too if you can 100% handle it all without killing your sculptors in the process (and/or killing the awesome amount of details you have currently). Whatever you choose, I'm sure it'll be awesome, so keep up the great work! <3

I have both types of printer so I would be interested in the larger terrain. If the FDM only tier is cheap enough then I might consider it, maybe 4-7 dollars (+20% tax). I don't know if I could afford another full price subscription right now, although I suppose the price point would depend on how big the monthly releases are. I think that if you do make another patreon, then keeping some small terrain in this patreon for those that don't want the larger stuff or can't afford it is a good idea.

Probably minis.

The Dragon Trappers Lodge

Good points, particularly the community.

William M

We aren’t sure about the merchant tier yet. Probably wouldn’t make people subscribe to two merchant tiers though.

The Dragon Trappers Lodge

That just makes it more convoluted and decrease the chances of new patrons signing up. We’d rather just create and market a separate product.

The Dragon Trappers Lodge

Possibly both but if not it would be on the mini side.

The Dragon Trappers Lodge

Probably $5 for scatter $10 for fdm or $15 for both

The Dragon Trappers Lodge

To clarify, the giant lodges/animal bases we have seen, where would they fall?

DustlessOrphan

If this, as a merchant, would mean that I need two subscriptions, possibly even with two separate merchant licenses I personally would strongly dislike it and not consider the new patreon at all. I am a heavy completionist and I would hate missing out on the terrain, but this wouldn't work for me. PrintYourMonsters has a model where you can subscribe to the merchant tier of one (PrintYourMonsters/Fantastic Plants and Rocks) and still get both releases every month as a merchant and I still dislike it, because I only have the news and community unlocked for one of them and not both. The idea of separating tiers for Minis only, Terrain only and both would seem like the most useful solution to keep the community bundled in one place.

Echoing what some others have said, have you considered merely making another tier to this Patreon? One for minis, one for terrain, and an all-in bundle that has both for a slightly lower monthly price? Other groups on Patreon have handled it like this, and it’s seemingly worked out well for them. Personally, I don’t think that I would subscribe for an all terrain Patreon, but I might consider a combo/bundle, yet I’m really here for just the minis at the end of the day

I would rather just modify my subscription to the Patreon to pay more and get the mdf terrain.

Josh Kita

I like the idea , I have both types of printers , and as of late , the fdm printer hasn’t seen nearly as much use as I’d like , I’d sub to a second patreon

I think your poll is to simple it doesn't get the why they are saying yes or no or weather they woulkd stick with you if things didn't go their way. Your poll should be more like. 1. I love the idea I will subscribe to both. 2. I dont mind the idea but I will only subscribe to the current one. 3. Its okay and I will subscribe only to the new one . 4.Im not thrilled with the idea but It might be okay Id have to look at what is offered each month 5. I like things the way they are I cant afford 2 patreons and if I cant get thing the way they are I wont support this patreon anymore.

Lisa Kellogg

Makes sense to me, although I really hate this idea that large terrain pieces are just for FDM. Large resin printers are available now and resin is pretty cheap. If you do create a second patreon for the large pieces please don't sacrifice the detail level of the pieces just because you expect them to be FDM printed. Also, how does merchant tier work in this case?

Harry Colquhoun

How would you guys handle merchant tiers for two patreons? And would you consider maybe doing split tiers in the current patreon (only terrain, or only minis, or both)?

HalZyr's 3D Emporium

I have both resin and FDM printers, but I'd still rather get more minis for my money with the current patreon. Terrain in general is not as appealing to me, so given the option to move the terrain out and pull more mini models in, I'd choose that.

Eric

Don't really need another Patreon to sub to, but TDRL always delivers the goods... and it's always done well. I would totally support the new Patreon and grab more TDRL goodness. EDIT: Don't know why I didn't think of this before... as others stated, just make another tier. DON'T do 2 separate Patreons.

Scott M.

Would larger creatures with lodges on them fall into the miniature or terrain category?

I can see the pros and cons. What would make a decision easier is knowing what kind of monthly subscription cost the new patreon would likely carry, it‘s a big difference if it‘s 5 or closer to 10€.
