God of War Video Update

Hi everyone. I'll keep this quick.

So the video isn't coming out this month. Nothing really bad happened that set me back too much. There was a problem with some of our boxes being shipped. Finn destroyed my laptop which had an updated version of the script on it (my fault for letting him have it, not his). But these only cost me a day or three overall. The big problem was that I just made a poor choice in how I used my work time by streaming Danganronpa. I thought it would only be roughly 20 hours. It ended up being just under 50 hours, not including set up time and other stream related work.

Streams are a part of what I do now but the videos should take priority. I made a bad decision and I'm sorry about that.

I've set a deadline for August 10th to get the video finished. I think I can get it done sooner than that and have given myself an earlier deadline, but enough things have gone wrong lately (especially with Subnautica) that I don't want to make a promise that might get broken. I was also halfway done with a video prior to switching over to God of War so the next one shouldn't take nearly as long to finish. Plus we don't have to move again.

Patreon should not start charging you until 48 hours from now so if you want to skip a month then I'll understand. This should be enough notice, especially if you've been eager to see the video and are watching for updates.

Also I wanted to let everyone know that I can record scripts during the day now because it's quiet enough in the basement. This is going to help a lot with every future project but it also opens up the possibility of smaller videos being much more viable as regular content between big videos. I'll still have to pick the topics carefully, and I want God of War finished before I get into them, but that change should be happening. The big problem with that before was having to rearrange my entire schedule every time I needed to record at night in the old apartment. Not anymore.

Thank you for your time. Hope you like the video.

4 months, no video. $4000 a month. And for what? Think about that guys. I am all for supporting someone when they are active, but after this long without a video?

Heyooooo, never watched your streams but really love your youtube. I found myself wishing you would upload more videos so I decided to become a Patreon. Don't even care about the features, just wanted to support you :) Just throwing it out, please make a video of Castelvania: Symphony of the Night, my favourite videogame ever. I will still love you if you don't though :)

Joe I love your streams, but if you slowed the pace at which you stream... I think that would be best for everyone. I can't keep up with how much content you produce on Twitch. A weekly stream would be more of an event to get everyone hype. Other people have probably asked for video editing streams, but know that it would be appreciated. A combination of playing games and editing videos could make for productive work flow?

I think there’s just a general air of disappointment from those of us that don’t watch the streams, but the issue is not the streaming. I’m happy you are interacting and enjoying gaming with the fans. The issue is that people are perceiving any time where you are active online as time that should be spent making videos. For you, there is no way to explain how every second of your day is spent. You are a person with a life outside of content creation, but viewers feel indebted to content the moment they subscribe. Your move created a pause in production that aggravated those who do not understand the monumental task that moving is. People need to take some time to breath and accept the fact that their favorite youtubers can’t be all business when their family and lives will and should always come first. I will say to you Joe that spending 30min to patronize an upset fan by explaining your work flow (something that I have seen you do before) is not the correct way to handle someone speaking out of emotion. He likes your channel enough to give you money and watch your content. If someone feels slighted by you wrongly, keep your feelings to the side and explain the situation. The moment emotions get involved any chance at conversation and understanding is replaced by name calling, accusations, and angered rambling. Everyone calm down, be happy that our favorite creator has a new home for his family, and await some great new content.

This makes the assumption that streaming takes massive amounts of time away from producing his videos. You're assuming all the time he's been putting towards streaming would have been used specifically for videos. That might not be how his work flow operates. He plays tons of games for his videos anyways, the difference now he's doing it live with an audience. He's stated numerous times that streaming does not take away from video time, or at least in any substantial way. But also, diversifying his income, especially in this field is important. You're making a lot of assumptions right now that aren't necessarily fair.

See, this is what I don't really understand. Don't get me wrong, I really genuinely love your critiques, however. What is this Patreon. This situation you have, where you have something around 300k subscribers on youtube is a result of high quality critiques on games. Not many people do these well, so your content is breath of fresh air in this regard. As a result, you could start a patreon, where people could support you and you could dedicate more time to make these videos. Now, at the goal of 1000 dollars, you yourself said that the channel would become your job. This goal was reached without problem, since you were genuine in your intentions. However, this also means that you are now employed, and you have certain responsibilites to us, your patrons. More specifically you are now obliged to deliver content in amount and quality you promised. This is not something you should do, might do or could do, this is something you must do, since you get payed thousands of dollars to do it. Now, I understand life happens, I left this patreon a while back, but I do know that you moved, so, allright, things can get hectic. However, when I’m thinking that, I learn that you created a new channel, streaming one at that and you have dozens upon dozens of hours of streams there. So, I’m like, what the fuck, This patreon was made to support Joseph Anderson, the critique guy, not the Joseph Anderson, another streamer guy. The way I perceive it, you made a youtube channel, put a ton of work into it and it payed off later, you gained attention and subscribers. You gained money trough adsence as well, but that is not enough to pay bills. I get that, things can get expensive, especially with multiple kids. So, if people enjoy your content, why not create patreon. With second source of income, you could make this your job. So you did that and it worked, and then, instead of focusing on what you promoted, the critiques, you started to invest your time somewhere else. The streaming. And you opened third source of income, donations and subscriptions. Like don’t get me wrong, but you are not getting payed for streaming, it was not original pitch of the channel, nor this patreon . It is even more obvious with the subscriber difference you have on those channels. You made this patreon to support critiques, you got money (thousands of dollars) to do that, and than you decided, to sink that time into streaming instead. In normal job, you would simply be fired, in here, well, you will get supported I guess. You are literally getting payed on patreon for streaming, where you get payed again from donations and subscriptions. I love your critiques, they are one of the kind. It frustrates me that this kind of talent is wasted on somewhat generic streams. We don’t think we need another streamer number 15 457, we need Joseph Anderson, the number one in critiques.

As far as I know, that was the main motivation. If I recall correctly, streaming was meant for people who want to be part of the creation process. So Joe would play games he would later critique, and we could watch him form his opinions. However, since then, how many games he streamed made to that ,,critique" part? Like, 3, out of dozens? mehh

Yeah I dont care for the streaming, but i'll support you regardless. Although it does feel that we got alot more videos 1-2 years ago compared to the last six months when you started streaming.

No reason to skip a month, I pay you to support you, not to watch your videos.

Good, an actual update. If you start making videos again (on regular basis), I might consider supporting you again. Until then, I really don't see a point in supporting a streaming channel via patreon.

Don't sweat it Joe! Its an unconditional sub.

Please don’t worry about that. Personally I don’t care about streams, but I don’t mind a delay. It’s totally understandable. I’m not skipping a month and I’m still eager to see your God of War critique :).

I agree. I also think Joe is welcome to recommend his subscribers do whatever he thinks is best but I think this is a strange precedence. I believe people become patrons because they enjoy your content and want to support you so it's easier for you to produce it. I hope nobody is "purchasing" videos on a specific schedule. If the schedule isn't to their liking and they no longer want to support you, that's totally fine and an individual decision everybody should make, but personally I would think minor delays aren't a good reason to decide a content creator is no longer deserving of support. If you suddenly dropped to 2 videos a year or something? That might be different. If the quality of the videos is no longer to your liking? That's different. A delay here or there? Joe isn't our employee. We're his patrons. I can't imagine a small delay here or there feeling like a good reason to no longer want to support somebody who's content you enjoy and value.

If you're going to invest so much time into streaming, why not just make those games into your video projects?

Honestly, the Danganronpa stream was worth it; extremely entertaining. I very much appreciate you adding fun streams to your already amazing long form video game critiques.

Kyle McGuffin

Echoing the sentiments of others, no worries about monies, delays are always expected. Appreciate the honesty though, as always <3

Sprinklers at 10PM ?!?!?!?!!

Awful Waffle

On behalf of many, allow me to assure you that we support you because we enjoy your well thought out videos. We aren't expecting one per month. You make quality content, and you also should take the time to spend with your family and life. Take your time, and don't worry about the delay.

Chris Grenard

Indeed. I use NAS. But then, I don't have kids! :)

James Conway

Setup some kind of cloud backup so that you don't lose valuable work!

Ting

No problem Joe, your content is always worth the wait.

I don’t think you should be saying to people that it’s okay to skip a month. Set backs are part of the job, and even though you didn’t deliver completely on what you said, it makes it feel weird to have you say that it’s okay to skip a pledge. Hope things go well! I am excited to see the God of War video!

Joseph Noll

Can't wait! Ive been eager to hear your opinion on it. Stoked
