Are Remakes ๐™๐™š๐™–๐™ก๐™ก๐™ฎ a Good Thing?

Sorry this one is so late gamers, I've been SWAMPED with stuff to do. I've had to take a long time off the Doctor Who video because I'm so busy with other stuff, mainly prep for the As Always anniversary and such.

Thankfully though, to make up for how much I've been preoccupied, and this being later than I had hoped, I tried to be a little more creative with this one, do some more editing and what not, I'm really happy with how it turned out, honestly for a Patreon video I maybe put a little TOO much effort in.

Hope you enjoy it folks!

this is gonna sound like a batshit insane example, but Baldi's Basics in Education and Learning of all things is a fantastic example of a good remake in my opinion the original is an ugly janky mess obviously made in unity in 2 weeks for a game jam. it imitates the 90s edutainment style on a surface level, but it still Feels like a modern game, especially if you're familiar with how low budget unity games feel. the gameplay vision is mostly there, which was the most important artistic aspect, but basically everything else suffered. however, Classic Remastered, released 4 and a half years later, is so much better. everything is crisp and sharp and aliased, the sound effects are compressed in a way that feels right without being distracting, the whole game has a weirdly pleasing dithering, and all the music is real-time midi files that echo out the last instrument when you pause, using that generic microsoft wavetable. the Vibes are all there. there are definitely gameplay changes, but they make the game much more consistent and balanced, compared to a poorly thought out and unfair mess. plus improved accessibility (like subtitles), more content (a demo for BB+, challenge modes, an insanely cool bossfight), and all of it is free?? i can't imagine recommending the original to anyone, and i think that's because it wasn't made to just update the game for new systems, or to broaden appeal, or especially not to make money (again, free). it was made because the developer has a vision he's passionate about. he didn't just see an opportunity and take it, there wasn't really demand, he could've just kept focusing on the new game and left that game jam demo in the dust. but he saw his old work, saw all its flaws, and said "i see these flaws, and i know how to fix them". and so he remade the game in a new light, with an improved skillset and better understanding of what's fun, and put out a much better representation of his art. obviously, this isn't a game with any much Meaning behind it in an artistic sense, the tiny bit of story is basically making fun of the idea the game has some deeper lore behind it; but clearly you understand the idea of core gameplay itself being art, and the way that gameplay is supposed to feel, and those things are so drastically improved. and again, i think that's because it was the original creator doing it out of raw passion. and then on the flip side, there's stuff like telltale's walking dead definitive edition, that just slaps an ugly comic filter over the previous games that loses so much detail and changes how everything looks for the worse, while somehow being buggier than the originals. at least it's less egregious than the ps4/xbone only "collection" release that just has completely different graphics altogether. *sigh*
