Doctor Who S14E08: Empire of Death (Commentary/Review)

Well fuck, what a load of shit 😭 Maybe some of the worst Doctor Who there ever was.

This season was better than Chibnall's era but just marginally superior to Season 7B and in some ways worse. Join me for the final commentary of the season. I'll see you for another at Christmas, let's hope we see some major MAJOR improvements moving forward.

I'm also working on a video for this season, a big scripted critique. Might take me a bit but production is in full swing, so look forward to that!

I do plan to, I haven’t yet got around to watching the Christmas special but hopefully I’ll have done before the new season starts (I’m aware it’s very soon 😂)

Do you intend to do commentaries like this for the Christmas special and/or the new season btw? I really liked them

Right? It’s wild because when they reintroduce the Daleks they do so through the lens of the Time War, which, without any prior knowledge of the classic series allows kids to pick up on them being The Doctor’s arch nemesis separate from them being that due to their infamy from the classic show. People who were fans of Classic Who will understand that of course they were major players in the time war, and newcomers can understand how much The Doctor has a personal vendetta against them because of how the first 5 episodes built up and explored the Time War. Sutekh is just like… yeah idk man, dog is here, let’s watch old Doctor who episodes on a portable tv. Same writer btw 😭

One thing I haven’t seen mentioned much online is how odd it was to bring back a relatively unknown villain from the Classic series. This new era has been heavily marketed as a fresh entry point, a new Series 1, so I convinced a friend to start watching the show. As you can guess, he wasn’t impressed. The big reveal of the villain as a giant dog with a generic “I want to destroy the world” motive and zero distinct personality feels like a baffling creative decision. If they wanted to reuse an old character, they needed to reintroduce him more properly. How are new viewers supposed to feel anything but underwhelmed? And then the Ruby’s mom twist at the end just capped off an already disastrous episode.
